The famous Warhammer 40,000 universe is about to grow with Necromunda: Ash Wastes. The new game is extremely expensive at $300, and not every fan likes it. You can find out here on MeinMMO why it can still be worthwhile and what the new tabletop game has to offer.

What kind of game is this? Necromunda is a spin-off of the popular Warhammer 40K series. Unlike Warhammer 40,000, where armies of space marines, space orcs and murderous aliens collided, Necromunda are small-scale gang skirmishes. They live in the gigantic city complexes on the hostile world of Necromunda.

The first version of this game was released back in 1995 and was an instant hit with Warhammer 40K fans. The series was eventually scrapped, but in 2017 there was a new edition – now out of print. Recently, another version of Necromunda was announced with “Necromunda: Ash Wastes”.

This time, however, the gangs also fight each other outside of the city. There are also new units, such as vehicles or mounts. And the already well-known gangs are joined by the tough nomadic clans of the Ashen Desert.

What is Warhammer 40,000? Warhammer 40,000 (or 40K) is a popular miniatures tabletop system from the UK manufacturer Games Workshop. Since 1987, you have been able to field armies of miniatures in the unforgiving 41st millennium. Warhammer 40K is characterized above all by the particularly impressive figures and the gloomy and also exaggeratedly ironic setting, in which there are virtually no “good guys” and war is constantly raging.

Outrageously expensive miniatures, but ideal for hobbyists

How much does all this cost? Necromunda: Ash Wastes will be available for pre-order starting Sunday, May 1st, 2022. But the price is decent, 299 US dollars should according to the Polygon page have been confirmed by retailers for the base game box.

That is almost twice as much as currently for the out-of-stock predecessor box from 2017 on eBay is offered.

Who is this ideal for? For the money you get the following content out of the box:

  • 2 full gangs, House Orlock and the new nomads. 10 figures are each on foot. In addition, the orlocks have 2 quad vehicles and the nomads have 4 riders on strange beetles.
  • Multiple terrain pieces that are fully modifiable.
  • A rule book, unit cards, dice and templates
  • Marker tokens and a playmat

Especially the new miniatures and terrain parts are the prime pieces of the package. Because, as usual, they are extremely detailed and even in the age of privately affordable 3D printers, the figures from Warhammer are unparalleled. Each figure looks unique and can be customized. There are interchangeable heads with different glasses, hairstyles and even epic mustaches!

The same goes for the terrain pieces, which can be combined individually, giving each player the chance to create a truly unique set.

Since tabletop players often tend to put a lot of time and creativity into the appearance of their armies and terrains, the new Necromunda set, despite the high price, is an enticing proposition for many.

How are the fans reacting? If you look at the community, the picture quickly emerges that many would like to have the new set. Especially the miniatures have been coming up since the first announcement reddit well received, even if the price was considered too high:

“I think it looks really incredible, but I’m just as excited [über das Set] how shocked about the price.”

$300 is loud reddit many players too much money. But there are alternatives. Some users suggest simply sharing the prize with a buddy. After all, you need 2 players for a game of Necromunda anyway and if everyone pays $150 and shares the terrain, it’s affordable again.

Other fans suggest just buying the miniatures and terrain once it’s available separately. The 10 figures per course should cost 47 dollars each, the package with the figures or the riding insects also 47 euros each.

And many players find that they don’t need the vehicles and mounts anyway (for now). Then the old rules of the earlier Nekromunda editions would be sufficient to play and you would get away with a set of cool figures comparatively cheaply.

So much for the new Warhammer tabletop and the price dilemma. Another story about Warhammer 40K can be found here: Warhammer 40K distances itself from parts of its community: “We don’t want your money”
