Yes, that’s what we looked at when we heard that The Quarry has 186 endings.

In The Quarry, the new game from Supermassive Games, 9 teenagers struggle to survive during a summer camp. In the style of the spiritual predecessor Until Dawn, it is also important here to make decisions at certain points, which can then have a massive impact on the further course of the story, the fate of the characters and also the end of the game.

And how now from one Interview by IGN with the creators of the game shows, the number of different end sequences is remarkably large. Because overall it should 186 of these ends which of course vary mainly depending on the fate of each teenager. And while some of these endings may only differ in nuances, they are sequences that need to be developed.

A “mathematical nightmare” for the developers

And that was obviously quite a challenge during development. According to game director Will Byles, it was precisely the mass of different decisions and their separation into trees that made the whole thing a “mathematical nightmare”. Because two different paths would mean four if you made a new decision, and so on. That’s why you had to be careful that with nine characters, this jumble of possible routes – and thus of data – didn’t get too big.

According to Will Byles, this was achieved through the incorporation of many small, but not completely game-changing decisions, as well as a clever placement of the relevant decision points. These mainly take place when only a certain number of characters are affected, so there is also the genre-typical splitting of the group here.

All of these options culminate in one of the 186 endings mentioned and, according to Will Byles, of course, like in Until Dawn, they also allow the extreme endings – i.e. runs in which everyone survives or just dies. There are obviously plenty of opportunities to experiment.

Ene Mene Muh… and you’re dead! – Preview of Until Dawn’s spiritual successor, The Quarry

After the disappointments of Dark Pictures, Supermassive Games are again following the popular Until Dawn with their latest horror game. Classic teen horror flicks like Friday the 13th also served as inspiration. The Quarry is also supposed to become something like a “horror kit”. You can read exactly what that means and how it works in Samara’s preview of The Quarry, for which she was also able to speak to Will Byles.

The Quarry will be released on June 10, 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One and PC.
