CoD Warzone: Developer calls loot adjustment Gamechanger – "Changes gameplay experience in seconds"

Season 3 is now online in Call of Duty: Warzone and brought a lot of changes – weapon balance, new locations, a fresh order. But the senior creative director at developer Raven Software is primarily celebrating an innovation: lootable perks.

The new Season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone changes a lot in the free Battle Royale. So many sniper weapons have changed fundamentally and on the map Caldera some places look completely different. The highlights of the patch notes can be found here.

There was also a small change in the loot – you can now loot individual perks and benefit from the passive bonuses.

For the Senior Creative Director of the Warzone, Ted Timmins, this innovation represents a “game changer”. MeinMMO reports on the developer’s statements and explains the new mechanics with the lootable perks.

Lootable perks aim to change gameplay experience

What did the developer say? Ted Timmins conducted an interview with the American CoD news site “Charlie Intel” (via charlieintel.com).

The developer also spoke about the new, lootable perks in Battle Royale and was visibly impressed:

It’s something we’ve never had in Warzone before. […] a fundamental game changer for Warzone. Probably one of the biggest we’ve ever had. […] I don’t recall there being many loot changes that had such an impact on the gameplay experience from one second to the next.

How do the lootable perks work? All over Caldera you can now loot and add perks to your loadout perks.

However, only one loot perk is active at a time. If you pick up a new perk, the old one will disappear. If you are killed, the perk disappears and you do not leave the bonus as loot.

You can now loot the following perks on Caldera:

  • battle hardened
    • Protects against tactical grenades
  • technician
    • Detects and hacks enemy equipment
  • alarmed
    • Visual signal when enemies are looking at you
  • Fill up
    • Returns gear over time
  • Hardened
    • 2 armor plates instead of 3 for full armor
  • patch up
    • After a kill, health regeneration starts immediately
  • marauder
    • Enemies drop supply packets
  • Points Friend (loot money only)
    • Missions give more cash as a reward

More perks will come later. Incidentally, the new mechanics are only available in the Battle Royale on Caldera, not on Rebirth Island. Here the lootable perks should also come later.

Cheaters in CoD Warzone are no longer just banned – they are severely humiliated

Why should the impact on gameplay be so big? The perk meta in Warzone is pretty strict and there are usually only a few alternatives that are worthwhile. Perks like “Overkill” or “Battle Scout” are so strong that the alternatives are rarely chosen – although some can be really helpful in gameplay.

For example, there’s Alert, a very powerful perk that gives you a visual signal when enemies are looking at you. If “Overkill” and “Ghost” didn’t exist, this perk would certainly end up in the loadouts more often.

Knowing which direction an enemy is aiming at you from actually changes the gameplay quite a bit as well as how you behave in the match. With other strong perks in the line-up, the influence of the lootable perks on the gameplay should be quite noticeable.

Season 3 brings a lot of content and many adjustments right from the start. But many players are now looking forward to May 11th when the event “Operation: Monarch” starts, which brings Godzilla and King Kong to Caldera.

Before that, however, we would like to know what you think of the lootable perks in Warzone or the changes in Season 3 in general. Please leave us a comment on the topic.
