Everyone with PS Plus and enough courage should check out a co-op secret tip on PS4 & PS5 in May

Tribes-of-Midgard-03

The games for PS Plus in May are well known and among them is a special pearl. Tribes of Midgard gave MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus a number of enjoyable hours. Find out here what the co-op ARPG offers.

What is this secret tip? Tribes of Midgard was released in August 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. At that time, the game looked more like a survival MMO with lots of combat mechanics in the trailers.

Tribes of Midgard played very differently when it was released. It’s now more like a roguelite action RPG in isometric perspective. There you play a Viking who is supposed to defend his village during the impending Twilight of the Gods.

Tribes of Midgard is one of the games coming to PS Plus in May 2022, offering both solo and co-op content for up to 10 players.

Viking roguelite in timeless comic graphics

How to play Tribes of Midgard: At its core, Tribes of Midgard is an action RPG. You control your Viking in an isometric perspective and fight against enemies. Choose one of the 8 available classes, level up and collect resources and souls.

With this you build your armor, tools and weapons in order to be able to hunt more enemies in the different biomes. The expansion of the village must also be advanced: defenses, upgrades for craftsmen and even quests are available.

You can choose to face off against the dangers of the world in story mode or endless mode.

What is the goal? Each season you pursue a different goal, such as defeating the mythical Fenris Wolf or the Midgard Serpent. To do this, you have to find ways to the monsters and then kill them.

You are under time pressure because you only have a limited number of days. You are regularly attacked and have to fight back enemies and even powerful boss giants. The attacks keep getting stronger. If they overrun your village, you have to start over.

Yes, some of the bosses may not even fit on the screen…

Each death is also punished by first having to recover your corpse and retrieve your equipment. One small mistake can cost you the entire turn, especially late in the game when you’re already dealing with tons of monsters.

For survival, however, you will then gain access to new content and even new classes to choose from.

How is the game? Tribes of Midgard has lost a lot of players over the months. A big problem should be that roguelites are the classic indie genre and tend to fall into niches. Anyone who wanted an MMO was disappointed. I had less problems with that, because roguelites are my thing:

I’m infatuated with games that I can only lose

However, the developers are already working on improving the game. After 97% of the players on Steam disappeared, Tribes of Midgard now wants to become more like the survival game Valheim.

Less time pressure, more Valheim in the future

This is how it goes on: With one of the upcoming updates, Tribes of Midgard wants to completely reinvent itself. The survival mode is then more reminiscent of Valheim: You get more components and above all defend your own base, which you also build up yourself.

You should no longer have time pressure, but can explore more or less in peace, discover the world and pursue your own goals. You can also continue to level up your character and discover more possibilities to realize yourself.

When this update will appear, however, is still open. The second season is currently running, the snake saga. This started in December 2021, so it stands to reason that Season 3 or the new content will soon be around the corner.

If you own PS Plus, however, you should give Tribes of Midgard a shot starting May 3rd. Even if the game is perhaps a bit idiosyncratic, the setting alone makes it one of those that I enjoy playing again and again:
