SEGA: Sega withdraws digital Sonic titles from the market

SEGA (Unternehmen) von SEGA

A rogue who suspects money-making behind it: Shortly before the release of the retro collection Sonic Origins, Sega is withdrawing four classic Sonic games from the digital stores. Without giving reasons.

A week ago, Sega announced the retro collection Sonic Origins (we reported): It contains the souped-up hedgehog originals Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 as well as Sonic 3 & Knuckles, plus Sonic CD. It will appear on June 23 and should probably sell as well as possible. But what could reduce the incentive to buy this bundle? Exactly, the fact that the included games have been available in the digital stores for a long time in cleanly emulated form. It’s just stupid if you want to earn money with cult games not only twice, but also a third time…

This results in the rather uncool move that on May 20, 2022, around a month before the Sonic Origins release, the four games will be removed from the stores. In Sega-speak, this means: “The company will be retiring the digital versions of the standalone titles that will be included in the upcoming game Sonic Origins on May 20, 2022. These include Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD.” But there are also exceptions: “Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will continue to be available via Sega Ages on the Switch and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will still be playable via the Sega Mega Drive on Nintendo Switch Online +.”
