Dragonflight brings back old dungeons from WoW - but some of the best are missing

In Dragonflight, the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, the seasons for mythical keystone dungeons (“Mythic+”) will be played out a little differently than you are used to. Game Director Ion Hazzikostas went into more detail on what that should look like in an interview. MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus sees problems here.

How does Mythic+ work in Dragonflight? In Dragonflight, only 4 of the expected 8 new dungeons will be included in the rotation for Mythic+ in the first season. 4 more dungeons are from old expansions. Season 2 should then be rotated.

Blizzard is already experimenting with the system with Season 4 of Shadowlands, which is still pending. There, 2 dungeons from 3 old expansions will return, which fans were allowed to vote on beforehand.

The result of the voting was very unpleasant for me, because the worst dungeon comes back in Shadowlands. The prospects for Dragonflight are even worse, with some of the best dungeons being ruled out straight away.

Dungeons older than Mists of Pandaria are not coming back for now

Which dungeons are coming back? During a “TwitterSpace‘ Ion Hazzikostas and story chief Steve Danuser spoke to two of the editors wowhead. Among other things, it was about Mythic+.

In conversation it was said that only certain dungeons meet the criteria at all. When asked if Classic Dungeons are returning, Hazzokostas replied:

That’s unlikely. Maybe, in a world where we’re going to completely rework the old dungeons like we did in previous expansions, a corresponding version could [des Dungeons] meet the requirements in terms of visual fidelity and mechanical complexity. But these dungeons are unsuitable for modern gameplay.

I think internally the team drew the line with Mists of Pandaria and beyond in terms of how we feel about designing dungeons today. That doesn’t mean we can’t go further back, but we’d have to fundamentally overhaul dungeons if we did.

This means: dungeons from Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King are not coming back for the time being – and if they are, then not in the way you know them. The two expansions are the two highest rated on Metacritic and absolute fan favorites.

Shadowlands and Battle for Azeroth are also excluded because they are still “too new”. You want to offer variety and keep the seasons fresh. According to current information, only dungeons from Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Dreanor and Legion are coming back. At least one of the most popular extensions is included.

No timewalking, but adapted dungeons

How do the new versions of dungeons work? Unlike the time-walking events you know from retail WoW, the old dungeons won’t be exactly “like they used to be”. There should be adjustments.

Previously there was Challenge Mode, which was later converted to Mythic+. Hazzikostas explains that the dungeons still need to be modified to accommodate modern M+. How exactly, however, we do not yet know.

The big difference is that Challenge Mode starts from Heroic difficulty, while Mythic+ starts from Mythic. In the past there were only cosmetic rewards, today it’s also about new and strong items for the endgame.

Is this a problem? More or less, because already in Shadowlands there is the problem that some old items are better than new ones. For example, a trinket from Dungeon of the Wardens (Legion) is the strongest option for some DPS classes, even at a low item level.

The main problem here is that the corresponding dungeon is only accessible every few weeks and you only have a short time to get the item. To ensure that this does not happen, Hazzikostas promises adjustments to items. Every class should be able to benefit from the dungeons.

In any case, the system should provide more variety, not just a “slightly different route through the dungeon” when a new affix is added. You want to focus on long-term diversity here. However, there are other promises, especially when it comes to loot:
