LoL asks: What should our new MMORPG definitely not have? The biggest WoW Twitch streamer answers

Riot Games is currently working on the conversion of an MMORPG to League of Legends. The Game Director “Ghostcrawler” now wanted to know on Twitter what people don’t want his new game to have under any circumstances. The well-known Twitch streamer Asmongold also got involved in this discussion.

What exactly did Ghostcrawler want to know? In a tweet, Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, the boss of the new MMORPG, collected feedback directly from the players. There it says:

Let’s be a little more negative for a moment. Without swearing at other games, what features do you NOT want to see in the game we’re developing?

By the game he means the new LoL MMORPG, about which we have compiled all previous information for you here.

This call garnered more than 5,000 likes and 1,000 comments within two days. Asmongold, who is considered one of the biggest WoW fans but also a WoW critic on Twitch and YouTube, also took part in the discussion.

No character-bound progression, no regression and meaningful levels

What does Asmongold want for the LoL MMORPG? In his first tweet he names three things that the new MMORPG should definitely not have:

  • Character-specific progression instead of account-wide. He is probably alluding to things like success or sharing a bank.
  • Content that was deliberately left unfinished in order to be revised later or improved as new content.
  • Backwards progression, i.e. the loss of items or experience points that you have previously earned.

He also commented in another tweet on a statement from Twitch streamer shroud, who has been very active in New World and Lost Ark in recent months. The streamer goes as far as saying he’d like to play a levelless MMORPG. Instead, there should be a system through which one becomes stronger as one advances in the world.

Asmongold responded that levels in an MMORPG must have some value, praising New World’s crafting and item system:

I really liked how in New World even the items and professions you use and collect while leveling have an impact on the overall economy.

While I think some degree of leveling is nice, it should have a purpose and at the same time lead you towards a larger goal in the endgame

Who is Asmongold? For a long time, Asmongold was the largest WoW streamer in terms of numbers. He played World of Warcraft for many years but finally lost interest in Shadowlands. He used the time to play many other MMORPGs such as Final Fantasy XIV, New World or Lost Ark. With his strong statements and many discussions about MMORPGs, he polarizes again and again.

Time gate, fast travel and grinding are big talking points

What are other players saying under the tweet? In the many comments very different things are mentioned that the players in the LoL MMORPG do not want to have.

The point is often called the time gate, meaning that something is artificially lengthened because it cannot be repeated infinitely, but is given a certain time limit. These include daily tasks or loot, of which you can only collect a certain number per week.

Many have spoken out against time-gate and daily quests, with Ghostcrawler arguing that these systems are often designed to keep other players from falling behind too much. Nevertheless, many frequent players do not want their freedom of time to be restricted.

There are daily quests in almost every MMORPG, whether it’s Guild Wars 2, WoW or Lost Ark here.

The topic of grinding is also discussed. Some like the fact that items require you to work hard, while others don’t want the game to become a “second job”. The developers have to find a good middle ground here.

Another big talking point is fast travel. This is also seen as very controversial:

  • Some find that fast travel destroys the immersion of the game. They want a grab system like in WoW or do everything on horseback.
  • Other players say that they don’t want to spend their valuable time waiting, but playing gameplay.

However, where all players agree is the renunciation of Pay2Win and FOMO (Fear of missing out), i.e. the fear of missing out on something special. The LoL MMORPG should definitely do without both.

LoL MMORPG is still a long way off

What is even known about the LoL MMORPG? Not much. It was announced at the end of 2020 and developers are still being sought for it. We know that in the endgame it relies on dungeons and raids and shouldn’t please every player in general. PvP will also be part of the game in some way.

The game is said to have a clear vision and is spearheaded by Ghostcrawler, the former lead designer of World of Warcraft. However, it currently looks as if the game will not be released anytime soon.
