Apple, Google & Microsoft work at the end of the passwords

Website login and platform login passwords could soon be a thing of the past. On yesterday’s World Password Day, the tech giants Apple, Google and Microsoft announced that they would implement the FIDO standard more intensively next year. This technology aims to provide users with a secure and easy login across all their devices and platforms without a password.

All three companies reported that passwords are one of the biggest security problems on the Internet hot. The security method tempts many users to use the same passwords over and over again. If a password falls into the wrong hands, the attacker has access to several accounts and the user’s personal data. Password managers and two-factor authentication are already an improvement, but logins with FIDO should be even more convenient and secure.

FIDO: Log in anywhere with a fingerprint or a smile

The abbreviation “FIDO” stands for “Fast Identity Online” and was created by the FIDO Alliance. These include Microsoft, Google and Apple. FIDO aims to provide users with a passwordless, standards-based login process for websites, apps and devices. Proven methods such as fingerprint or face recognition are used as unlocking methods. The advantage: phishing, keyloggers and password theft are useless with this method.

Microsoft, Google and Apple currently support FIDO to a certain extent. In the next year, however, FIDO should be even more closely linked to the respective operating systems and also become more convenient.

Log in securely anywhere using your smartphone

Current implementations of FIDO still require users to log in with their password in every app and website before they can use the passwordless FIDO variants. This step will be omitted in the future. As heise reports, the FIDO login data, the so-called passkeys, should work automatically for all accesses and even without prior setup.

Furthermore, users should also be able to use their mobile devices to log into nearby websites and apps using FIDO authentication. This should work regardless of the operating system or browser used. The storage of the FIDO passkey in the cloud is a prerequisite for this.
