If you have PS Plus, you should get FIFA 22 – because the story intro alone is worth the download

FIFA 22 saves a boring tutorial and offers emotions instead.

FIFA 22 doesn’t start with a ball and a lawn, but with a coffee and a croissant. To be honest, the story campaigns of the last parts about Alex Hunter could not pick me up, but the intro of the current offshoot all the more.

If you’re new to FIFA 22, or if you initially skipped the opening sequence for whatever reason, you should definitely check it out. Because with the approximately 30-minute sequence, EA Sports has finally looked beyond the box and given us an interesting insight into the world of football.

FIFA 22 is currently “free” on PS Plus:

This is what you can expect in FIFA 22’s crazy story intro

Coffee and croissant are part of David Beckham’s breakfast, sitting on the balcony of a Parisian hotel. The camera pans down into a room. Here you create an avatar and give it a fancy outfit. Then it’s down to the street, where the French freestyler Lisa Zimouche is already waiting for you to explain the controls of FIFA 22 to you.

Together with the soccer artist you dribble through the streets of Paris until you reach the stadium of Paris St. Germain. Here you can do some practice sessions with Kylian Mbappé and Thierry Henry. Then comes what you probably actually expected as an intro: a soccer game. Paris and Chelsea meet in the Champions League. Now you can finally apply the skills you have learned in practice.

Here’s the intro in action:

The story intro will probably not let anyone fall into complete euphoria or convert those who don’t like football, but at least EA is trying a slightly different approach here, which also tries to absorb the trappings around the lawn. However, you only get the sequence on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

FIFA is currently warming up for crossplay functionality

In addition to the intro, a breath of fresh air finally offers a crossplay feature that allows you to play together on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Initially, however, EA is only introducing a test phase that is limited to a few game modes. If this is satisfactory, the function could be expanded and implemented in FIFA 23 from the start.
