Even if you’re already fed up with battle royale shooters, Off the Grid might be something for you. It’s not just about the next big thing in the genre, but a fresh approach. It looks pretty interesting, at least on paper, and sounds like it might actually breathe new life into the genre. There are also two promising people involved.

Off the Grid: Another Battle Royale, but this time with a story

Off the Grid finally revealed: Not long ago it was announced that film director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie, Elysium) is working on a next gen shooter. Now we also know which one it is and also get the first details about the project, which sounds pretty cool. Altered Carbon author Richard K. Morgan is also on board.

The hard facts: Off the Grid comes for PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC and will be a third-person battle royale, i.e. a multiplayer shooter. However, the main focus is apparently on the story and the dark cyberpunk setting. The makers call this Battle Royale 2.0. Some details also sound suspiciously like NFTs are coming into play.

  • Online multiplayer
  • AAA shooter
  • Battle Royale on a “dystopian tropical island”
  • Third person perspective
  • cyberpunk setting
  • Story Focus and Missions
  • Players influence story
  • PvP and PvE on the same map
  • 150 players at the same time
  • Unreal Engine 5
  • For PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC

That all sounds pretty promising and ambitious, but of course leaves a lot of question marks. Above all, it remains unclear how exactly the story can be influenced and how it should fit into the Battle Royale gameplay. We’re also excited to see what Neill Blomkamp and Richard K. Morgan contribute.

Are NFTs planned? A little thing leaves us reading the FAQs on the official website from Off the Grid: An important core feature is the unique way in which players can craft, customize and trade with each other in game items. That sounds a lot like NFTs, but of course it can also work differently. More on that will be revealed in the near future.

What do you think of Off the Grid at first glance? What are you hoping for, what are you afraid of?
