With the support of Riot Games comes Players, a new TV series based on League of Legends. However, this will not be an anime, like Arcane, the LoL series from Netflix, but a “mockumentary”: It probably amounts to a parody of e-sports in LoL. Now the first trailer for “Players” has been released.

That’s the plot of the series:

  • The “Players” series tells the story of the fictional US LoL team Fugitive. It’s about an aging star called “Creamcheese” who once had great ambitions, she proudly announced, was also at the LoL Worlds a few times, but could never win.
  • Fugitive brings in Organizm, a star talent 10 years his junior who is so obsessed with LoL that he didn’t go to the bathroom and instead peed in a mason jar.
  • The series revolves around how the seasoned veteran and young star player grow closer, stake out their territory and eventually pull together.

Those are the topics that will be covered: You can see at first glance that the series plays with the clichés (“Mama, bowl!”), but also with the actual peculiarities of e-sports.

Because LoL is a game for “young people”: players who are over 25 are already considered “pensioners” in LoL and are in constant danger of losing their jobs to teenagers.

Fugitive’s story is a bit reminiscent of Team SoloMid, the biggest team in the LCS, who dominated the US but never thrived at the Worlds.

Their star player Doublelift is also 28 today, was replaced by younger players and didn’t quite get it. Apparently he’s also struggling with his ego.

How authentic is that?: The series definitely has the support of Riot Games and it may also feature people and teams that actually play a role in LoL pro sports. This is how Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses, two leading current LCS teams, can be seen.

Also present in a scene of the trailer is Froskurrin, a famous LoL “real life” caster.

One of the esports documentaries that makes tells “Players”: He worked behind the camera and can confirm that the show will strive to represent professional LoL authentically (via twitter).

Froskurinn is a well-known and distinctive LoL caster.

Woh can you see that? The “Players” series airs on ParamountPlus beginning June 16th. In Germany you can receive the station via “Sky Q”.

“It’s also the only way NA will ever win Worlds!”

How are the reactions? On YouTube, the comments are largely positive, but also mocking.

  • One user says: “I’ve been following Creamcheese since he debuted in the LCS, excited to see his legend finally being shown. Faker is great but CC will always be the greatest ever”
  • Another scoffed: “This is also the only way North America will ever win the Worlds LOL”
