Final Fantasy XIV: A Twitch streamer freaks out and insults his viewers when he learns of a rule

Third-party tools are generally not allowed in Final Fantasy XIV. The head of the MMORPG emphasized this several times. Some of the players still use them. One of them is streamer Pyromancer, who got angry when criticized for using the addons.

The situation in brief:

  • Third party tools and addons have been banned in Final Fantasy XIV for years. Players use them at their own risk and risk receiving temporary and permanent bans for doing so.
  • On May 9th, the head of the MMORPG, Naoki Yoshida, published a blog post in which he again emphasized that third-party tools are not allowed. He also explained what types of programs fall into this category.
  • Yoshida’s post appeared in connection with the world first race for the kill of the new ultimate raid Dragon War (Fatal). A number of participants used illegal addons, which gave them an advantage in battle.
  • As a result, several players received temporary bans for openly displaying the use of the addons in their streams or videos.

Yoshida’s post caused quite a stir in the FFXIV community. Camps were formed that represented different points of view regarding the regulation.

While some demanded strict enforcement of the 0 addons rule, others defended some of the addons. One such defender was the well-known streamer Pyromancer.

“You guys are so fucking stupid.”

Pyromancer was one of the YouTubers and streamers who switched to FFXIV in the summer of 2021 because they were dissatisfied with WoW. The move gave his channels a huge boost in followers, active viewers, and subs, making him one of the biggest FFXIV streamers in no time.

That happened: In his streams, Pyromancer openly used addons and mods that changed his user interface. Its icons, windows and text boxes looked different. Also, addons were showing him when he can move while casting spells and still not cancel them because the server doesn’t notice it due to lag, which is a DPS benefit.

In one of his recent streams, several viewers pointed out to Pyromancer that these types of addons are not allowed. The streamer defended the use because he “just wants to play the game, with a nice UI that doesn’t look like garbage. This is all I want.”

The conversation with the chat started calmly, but kept escalating. Pyromancer began yelling at and banning viewers who disagreed with him. Strong insults against individual users also followed.

The video ended with Pyromancer telling his opponents to “go outside and interact with real people.” The video’s Twitch clip is no longer available, but it was uploaded separately to multiple YouTube channels.

This is behind it: FFXIV viewers familiar with pyromancers will know that the streamer has a short fuse. He’s freaked out in the past and reacted aggressively to criticism. This makes him easy prey for trolls.

According to FFXIV streamer Arthars, a group of 5Chan users have targeted Pyromancer because he openly features mods in his streams and argues for their use. This group is said to have organized to carry out mass reports that should lead to the ban from the streamer.

Some of these users also found themselves in the Pyromancer stream and argued back and forth with him until he freaked out.

A day after his Rage stream, Pyromancer went online again. In an emotional stream he apologized for his behavior. He justified his blatant reactions with ADHD from which he suffers.

The streamer explained that he regularly sees a psychotherapist and takes medication for it. However, the disorder cannot always be controlled, which leads to his freaking out or offensive comments.

He still wants to keep streaming FFXIV because he loves the MMORPG and knows that most of the community is friendly. He originally said the game was “like therapy” for him. He will stream without addons or mods in the future.

What is ADHD? The acronym ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The following three main symptoms are characteristic of ADHD: hyperactivity (excessive urge to move), inattention (difficulty concentrating), impulsiveness (imprudent action). Yoshida’s post leads to a split in the community

FFXIV players argue about this: Yoshida’s post sparked heated discussions within the FFXIV community. Although the use of mods and third-party programs is not officially permitted, it is still relatively widespread.

  • Players change the look of the UI, their characters, and in-game clothing that only they can see. Or take the look of paid and partially unreleased items from the official store.
  • Get gameplay advantages through addons because they are immune to CC effects in PvP, for example, or see AoE areas in PvE that should actually be invisible.
  • Use automated bot programs that, for example, have their character crafted automatically or monitor the market board and immediately adjust the price of their items as soon as someone puts cheaper items up for sale and so on.

Director Yoshida has regularly warned in the past that using such third-party programs could result in penalties or a permanent ban. Use is therefore always at your own risk.

After the boss’s last blog post, two large camps formed, which are either for or completely against the use of addons:

  • Opponents of the addons say that using them is unfair to console players since FFXIV has unrestricted crossplay. Addon users on PCs get unfair advantages. Also, rules are there to be followed. Forbidden is forbidden.
  • Proponents like Pyromancer justify their position by saying that these addons, for example, improve FFXIV’s user interface and offer useful options that don’t bother anyone, but make the game more enjoyable.

Whether the boss’s warning will lead to less use is difficult to assess. There will definitely be fewer streams where the addons are visible in the future though, as the videos are evidence that can be used against the players.
