Originally, Sony planned to sell more units of the PS5 in fiscal 2021 than the Playstation 4 sold in the same part of its life cycle. The goal was thus set: at least 14.8 million PS models should be sold. However, it was clear that the impact on production chains in times of the pandemic would continue to be a sticking point. In November 2021, Sony had to announce that PS5 production would be throttled, which made the goals it had set less likely.

Now, Sony’s fiscal year 2021 figures (which ended March 2022) show that 11.5 million PS5 consoles were shipped during the period – over 3 million fewer consoles sold than forecast. In the first quarter of 2022, only 2 million consoles came out into the world. In view of the continued high demand, the production difficulties are likely to be a decisive factor. A total of 19.8 million units of the latest Playstation hardware have been sold to date.

The gaming segment grew just 3 percent year over year, but it remains Sony’s top-performing division. The group is confident that a total of 18 million PS5 models can be delivered in the fiscal year and that the gaming division’s profit will increase by over 30 percent. Next year will show whether these targets were too high given the less than optimistic forecasts regarding the chip crisis and other consequences of the pandemic (or the Ukraine conflict on the European economy).
