The Sony PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has probably commented on the current debate about the abortion ban in the USA in a very unusual way.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan does not seem to want to take sides when it comes to questions of physical self-determination and integrity. In an internal email, the CEO explains that with regard to the impending abortion ban in the USA, it is important to respect different opinions. Apparently, this did not go down well with many employees. But not only because the controversial PlayStation boss does not take a position here and apparently would not have a problem with an abortion ban, but also because the rest of the mail deals in great detail with the CEO’s pets.

Sexism and Discrimination at PlayStation: For some time there have been increasing reports of discrimination and sexism against women at Sony PlayStation in the US, which have resulted in a lawsuit. You can read more about the allegations in a separate GamePro article.

PlayStation boss sends questionable email and employees get angry

Extremely questionable mail: PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has once again lived up to his reputation as a controversial figure by sending an email to his own staff, which was short about the looming US abortion ban and very long about his pets. That not only sounds absurd and strange, but it is. Accordingly, the people who received the mail react angrily.

What’s in it? Jim Ryan explains that with regard to the debate surrounding the impending ban on abortion in the USA, it is important to respect all opinions equally – even though this is about basic human rights, physical autonomy and self-determination. According to Jim Ryan, this respect for other opinions does not equate to approval, but that doesn’t make his problematic statements any better.

Particularly little sensitivity the PlayStation boss proves that in the rest of the mail he writes at length about his cats’ first birthday. Because it is important to distract yourself with a little lightness in difficult times like these. He reports in detail about the cat’s birthday cake and that he is thinking about getting a dog as well. Because dogs are man’s best friend and also “know their place” and “can fulfill useful functions such as biting burglars”.

That’s what it’s about: The US is threatened with a return to a genuine abortion ban. A leak that has now been confirmed as real indicates that the Supreme Court could soon decide accordingly and overturn the so-called “Roe vs Wade” case law. Which would lead to high penalties for abortions in many US states. Even after children have been raped, abortions would not be allowed and could be punished more severely than the rape itself.

There have even been attempts to introduce the death penalty for abortions, although fortunately they have so far failed (via Reuters). The underlying, Christian fundamentalist argument does not stop at contraceptives and could, for example, also make the so-called “morning after pill” a punishable offence. You can find out more about this here at the southern Germans read or in this Last Week Tonight video see.

Sony’s development studio Bungie has in one blog post Incidentally, they took a very clear position on the whole matter and received much more positive reactions in return. Bungie calls the impending decision a “direct attack on human rights” and positions itself clearly for legal, safe and uncomplicated abortions.
