Sony unveils the WH-1000XM5 – with even better noise cancelling
Sony’s flagship headphones, the WH-1000XM4, are known for their good noise canceling. With the WH-1000XM5, the company has now introduced the next generation, which is said to offer even better active noise cancellation. There is also a revised design.
Like Sony in their own Press Centre proclaimed, control im WH-1000XM5 two processors a total of eight microphones, which reduce disruptive external noise, especially in the medium and high frequency range. An automatic noise-cancelling optimizer adapts the suppression to the respective environment. For example, the WH-1000XM5 can distinguish the background noise of a busy café from that of a crowded subway train.
Newly developed drivers and LDAC for high-quality sound
In addition to improved active noise cancelling, the WH-1000XM5 should also offer a high-quality sound experience. The specially developed 30 millimeter drivers made of carbon fiber composite react even more sensitively at high frequencies and thus ensure an even more natural sound.
The LDAC audio coding technology developed by Sony enables the playback of high-resolution audio content in high quality – wirelessly via Bluetooth. The DSEE Extreme feature, on the other hand, is intended to help restore fine details in compressed audio files and play music the way the artists intended. Sony’s surround sound feature 360 Reality Audio is also on board.
According to Sony, the battery life of the WH-1000XM5 is up to 30 hours with noise canceling activated. Without ANC, a runtime of 40 hours should even be possible. With the quick charge function, the headphones’ batteries can be charged within three minutes so that three hours of operation are possible.

No more folding mechanism, but new leather
This time, however, Sony has dispensed with the folding mechanism for the earphones, as was the case with the predecessor XM4. Accordingly, the carrying case for the XM5 is also significantly larger and the device is no longer quite as practical to stow away. However, the size of the headphones can be adjusted by continuously adjusting the headband.
A newly developed soft-fit leather should on the one hand shield external noise even better and on the other hand be comfortable to wear. A connection for a 3.5 mm jack is also available this time.
price and availability
The Sony WE-1000XM5 will be available in Germany from the end of May and will cost 419 euros (RRP). The headphones are available in the colors black and silver in this country.
