Foldable iPhone and iPad: Colored e-ink displays are to be tested at Apple

from Norman Wittkopf
Apple is reportedly testing colored e-ink displays for future foldable devices with a foldable screen, which will later include the iPhone and iPad.

While other manufacturers are already offering a few smartphones and tablets with a foldable display, Apple has not yet offered anything similar, but that is set to change in the future. According to the usually well-informed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is actively testing the Chinese company E Ink’s EPD (Electronic Paper Display) technology for use in future foldable versions of iPhones or iPads.

Kuo said on Twitter that color EPD displays could be used for the outer display of future Apple foldable devices, while the larger unfolded display would use a different display technology. As a form of e-ink technology, a color EPD display would be significantly more energy efficient than other display technologies, Kuo said.

“Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future foldable devices intended for cover screen and tablet-like applications. The color EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for the mandatory cover/secondary screen of foldable devices as it is very energy efficient.”

As macrumors.com referring to reportedApple plans to launch a 9-inch foldable device with display specs somewhere between iPhone and iPad around 2025. Kuo believes Apple’s foldable roadmap will focus on mid-range devices first, followed by from devices with larger displays before eventually expanding to small devices like the iPhone.

Foldable has been under discussion for some time

In addition, at the beginning of the year, the market researchers from DSCC said that Apple was interested in a large, foldable 20-inch display for a possible MacBook, while a foldable smartphone is not planned for the foreseeable future. The rumored 20-inch foldable is said to be several years away and not ready for the market until 2025 at the earliest.

In the meantime, the iPhone 14 model series is on the agenda this year, for which concrete information can be expected, as usual, in September for the presentation of the new models. However, there are already numerous probable details from the rumor mill about the new iPhones in terms of equipment, appearance and Co.
