MontanaBlack has to cancel long-planned CoD tournament with Twitch buddies - "I'm used to something like this"

The biggest German Twitch streamer, Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris, has been planning to host his own tournament in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 since April. There were some well-known personalities from Twitch and YouTube. However, MontanaBlack had to interrupt the tournament after almost 2 hours because of DDoS attacks on the server.

What was that tournament? In MontanaBlack’s “Black Ops 2” tournament, 8 teams of 4 people were supposed to compete against each other. The team leaders were 8 well-known content creators from YouTube and Twitch, who were able to get 3 more people on board. They played them against each other for 8,000 euros.

It all started on May 14th at 4 p.m. You can check out the exact teams in MontanaBlack’s tweet:

How did the preparation go? The servers were hosted by Plutonium in America. However, the setup turned out to be more difficult than expected and the hoster had to set everything up individually. The tournament was even postponed because of this (via Twitter).

YouTuber HapticRush and his colleagues also helped set up the servers, moderate them, and get everything up and running. They tested the servers for a month and checked whether everything was running smoothly, Haptic said on the evening of the tournament.

DDoS attacks force MontanaBlack to cancel the tournament

How did the tournament go? Almost not. At first it looked like everything was going fine. But then the lags started and the participants complained about pings between 300 and 400. At first it was not clear why that was because the servers and the internet were stable.

At some point it turned out that DDoS attacks were probably being carried out on the IP address. For almost 2 hours, Haptic, his colleagues and MontanaBlack tried to get the tournament going.

Eris saw no more hope after about an hour: “If it works, then it works. If we have problems again, we’ll cancel the tournament.” And that’s how it happened. The streamer called off the tournament, saying:

There’s nothing you can do now, chat. That is of course very, very unfortunate. (…) Haptic has invested so much time and love there, with his team, and it’s an absolute shambles for him right now.

MontanaBlack

HapticRush was visibly taken aback after putting in so much time and he left the stream for a while. MontanaBlack, on the other hand, seemed relatively relaxed:

I’ll be honest guys, I’m used to this. You know that, DDoS has always been a problem. (…) On montanablack.de, for example, we were regularly geDDoSt when we had campaigns.

MontanaBlack

He also appealed to his Twitch colleagues not to get upset about this, as that is exactly what the DDoSers want to achieve. He then continued with his stream normally, playing Fall Guys and other games with some of the participants in the tournament.

Will the tournament be repeated? Probably not for the first time. In the end, MontanaBlack only said: “Unfortunately, the ‘Black Ops 2’ tournament is canceled for the time being. (…) It is like it is. We can’t change anything now and won’t be able to change anything about it. Wipe your mouth and carry on – easy as pie.”
