WoW: Secrets in Azeroth – Scary secrets of Darkmoon Island
In our Retro series of items we regularly present highlights from over 15 years in buffed form! And this time we embark on a journey to Darkmoon Island, which came to the live servers in WoW: Cataclysm with WoW Patch 4.3. You probably already know inside out what awaits you on the island as part of the monthly Darkmoon Faire.
But the mysterious island probably hides a much darker secret that the common WoW player can only see if he looks very closely. Because to see the seven additional inhabitants of the island, which we want to tell you about, you have to go to the realm of the dead. But maybe the cannibalistic lady in the forest can tell you what happens to the souls of the deceased on Darkmoon Island?

But let’s start from the beginning: Greenish billowing clouds can be found on the ground all over the island, sometimes in the dark forest, sometimes on the beach, sometimes directly on the fairground of the Darkmoon Faire. This fog slowly moves back and forth in a certain area. At first glance, nothing more can be seen. But if you voluntarily send your character to his death, then things are very different. Because in the places where the clouds are wafting across the ground, you suddenly see the spirits of seven deceased heroes of Azeroth. What they are, where you can find them and what – sometimes cruel – story they have to tell, you will find out below.
But before that, let’s take a moment to think about why the restless souls wander the island and find no rest. Is it because they might have died a violent death? At least hints of this can be found in the texts of the NPCs. Or are the deceased bound to the island forever by an unpaid debt to Silas Darkmoon? Anyway, let’s introduce you to the characters!

Kupp coin value

The little goblin walks in circles on the high ground of the northern part of the island. As soon as you select him, you can read about five randomly selected texts in the text window, from which you can learn more about Kupp’s story. So the goblin ran into financial difficulties, but fortunately met Silas, the head of the Darkmoon Faire, who paid off his debt, even though he thought the goblin had almost paid off his debt.
Only a few gold coins were missing and he was sure that no one would notice their absence – but obviously it turned out differently. Kupp, now indebted to the gnome, worked in Silas’ service. Kupp’s ghost is convinced that nobody would mind if he helped out at the market. Maybe someone was bothered by the little rascal and turned him around the corner from behind? Or did his former trading partners take bloody revenge?
Arlon Festhoof
The spirit of Arlon Festhoof.

The tauren lady Arlon Firmhoof wanders the mountains in the southeast of the island and tells of her job as guardian of the camp. Arlon isn’t particularly talkative, but she emphasizes that even death doesn’t stop her from looking after the camp. She warns you that the forests are dangerous, she had to go through this painful experience herself. She was probably overpowered while on guard duty – we can only guess why.
Brendon Paulson

The ghost of Brendon Paulson, who wanders across the plain north of the fairground, tells you about a particularly tragic fate. He grew up in Strom, the capital of the Empire of Arathor. Brendon’s father was one of the particularly tough sorts, at least Brendon tells of a troubled childhood in Strom. Something bad must have happened, though, because Brendon says he ran away when his father tried to kill him.
As a child, Brendon came to Silas’ carnival, which provided him with a new home. He never wanted to see his family again, he didn’t miss his old life. His lyrics don’t reveal who might have killed him, but doesn’t one suspect that it was his father to correct his failure?
FranklinJenner
The Ghost of Franklin Jenner.

Franklin also walks across the plain north of the faire. He still wears the mail armor that served him faithfully in the war against the orcs. So many living creatures died at Franklin’s hands that one day he couldn’t take it anymore. He fled the battlefield and found shelter at Silas’ Faire, hoping to avoid war forever. One possible reason for his demise is that he was being hunted down by an Alliance member – assuming Franklin was indeed a deserter.
Martha Weller

The name will be familiar to the Alliance members among you, at least in Stormwind it’s just a few steps from the Auction House in the Trade District to the Weller’s Arsenal Weapon Shop. In the shop are Marda and Gunther Weller, it’s impossible to tell how related they are as they don’t have an option for gossip texts. However, it can be assumed that Martha from the Darkmoon Faire, who hangs around directly in the fairground, is a relative, maybe Marda’s sister.
If so, then she seems to have fallen out of favor with her family members. Because Martha Weller describes the fairground showmen as her family. She is kind-hearted, at least that can be read from her other comments; she says she can never let a hurt friend down. It is all the more strange that the healer of the fair could have died violently.
Sithera spinning material

The blood elf can be found in the south-east of Darkmoon Island looking for firewood. Most likely, she witnessed at least part of her own demise: Sithera thought she saw something in the bushes and then passed out. The blood elf is the most likely to have been ambushed. But for what purpose it is not clear. Nor is it possible to infer from her comments how she might be indebted to Silas.
zazla

You can find the troll on the north coast of the island, where it sneaks around near the cliffs. He reports that he barely survived a shipwreck. But it was apparently not a pleasure boat, but a prisoner transport. Apparently, Zazla was on his way to his own execution when the boat was shipwrecked and crashed into the rocks off the coast of Darkmoon Island.
“I saw those who held me captive die horribly. And I laughed,” says the troll spirit. This can either be related to the fact that his captors drowned in the floods. Or a far bloodier fate, as he says Silas protected Zazla from those who held him captive. Sounds like a bloodbath took place on the shores of the island.
Rona Greentooth

And such a bloodbath could perhaps be explained by a very specific NPC in the forest on Darkmoon Island. Because in addition to all the ghosts, another character, who is quite lively by WoW standards, eke out his lonely existence: Rona Grünzahn. The undead actually makes a completely normal impression until you speak to them. She tells how she prepared many delicacies if you weren’t hungry. No, these are not the fish that she has hung up on some wooden beams next to her. She only uses the fish to catch something better. You can find out what this “better” is by looking at Rona’s offer.
The lady offers the finest goods. Beer-soaked ribs, for example. Or green bacon with eggs. And troll tartare. However, if you take the trouble to read the yellow text next to the food, you will lose hunger in no time – unless you are cannibalistic. For example, the troll tartare: “Troll-style tartare, isn’t it, honey. Heehee!” The Mulgore Meatcakes: “They just have the BEST meat, honey. Hee!” The Teldrassil Fillet: “SURE it’s venison, honey. What ELSE would it be?!” Stormwind Surprise only says “Hee! Heeheehee! Heee-he- *örks* *cough* Ahem. Hee!” This is indeed “Orks”. All of Rona Greentooth’s Edible Goods: Green bacon and eggs, Gnomeregan Gnuggets, Foie Gras a la Unterstadt, draenei dumplings, Beer Soaked Ribs, Mulgore Meatballs, Silvermoon Steak, Stormwind Surprise, Teldrassil fillet and troll tartare.

And within sight of the lady, a little further north, there is a large tree in which five cages with skeletons hang. With humanoid skeletons, mind you. Another cage seems to have fallen from the tree and is lying on the ground. The bones in it look like those of a gnome. Getting back to where we started, we have seven restless spirits on Darkmoon Isle, at least some of whom obviously didn’t die of natural causes – and maybe there are even more restless souls. We have six cages with skeletons and a lady in the middle of the forest who wants to sell some excellent delicacies.
And then there’s Silas Darkmoon himself, who’s persona has now been shrouded in mystery thanks to reports from the spirits. Because: The human empire, Arathor, has long since disintegrated into smaller city-states such as Gilneas, Alterac, Kul Tiras and Dalaran. The wars against the orcs are also in the past for a while. How old will Silas be then? Or is Darkmoon Island even in a different time dimension? Only Silas himself can tell – but as long as he walks down the main street of the fair with his bodyguard and doesn’t elicit a word about the spirits of the island, the souls of the deceased will also be making their rounds on the island.
