PS1-themed Horizon Zero Dawn has Lara Croft vibes, but we prefer our 4K Aloy

Sehen wir Aloy möglicherweise irgendwann in einem Hero-Shooter?

Aloy wouldn’t have looked so pretty in the 90s.

Sometimes I think we don’t even know how lucky we are. The PS5 offers us UHD resolution, a (mostly) smooth frame rate, extremely fast loading times and various quality-of-life functions – at least for everyone who was able to get hold of one of the coveted consoles.

A glimpse into PlayStation’s past helps us appreciate these advances in technology again. And what better way to do that than a PS1-style demake of a modern classic.

This is what Horizon Zero Dawn would look like as a PS1 game

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West are known for their beautiful open worlds and dynamic combat system. Neither would have been possible on the PlayStation 1. Demakes show us how Aloy would have fared theoretically on Sony’s first console – i.e. the reinterpretation of a game on older hardware.

Youtuber ZeoNyph put Aloy back in 1996:

This can be seen: The clip starts with the classic PlayStation logo to set the right atmosphere. Then the adventure begins and Aloy trudges woodenly through the muddy landscape.

Some of you will immediately be reminded of games like Tomb Raider, which also used the Tank Controls control system. In the end, Aloy is jumped by a machine and dies. You can imagine what we would have expected after the typical “You Died” screen back then: A long look at a loading screen.

Nostalgia Strikes: If everything was worse, why do the videos still have warm feelings? Because not EVERYTHING was worse.

Games on the PS1 had their own style and charm. The graphics left a lot to the imagination and many genres had to be completely rethought after the end of the 2D era. An exciting time that many of us will probably remember forever. We still prefer Aloy on the PS5.

In the story trailer you can see how well Aloy is doing on the PS5:

More news from the Horizon universe:

It gets even worse

Do you find the pixel look of the demake unbearable? A fan of the PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn has taken it even further, turning the otherwise beautiful title down to 72p. At first the game just gets uglier, but at the lowest resolution, Zero Dawn is almost unrecognizable and looks like an impressionist painting.
