Take-Two Interactive: GTA 5 has sold 165 million copies

Grand Theft Auto 5 is almost ten years old and has now appeared on three different generations of consoles. But the demand remains unbroken: Take-Two announces a new sales record.

Take Two Interactive has strong quarterly figures reported, but the bare sales figures of their largest franchises sound much more interesting than profits and surpluses. GTA 5 has now surpassed 165 million copies sold, making it by far the most successful full-price video game in the world. Minecraft, that too tops the sales list on Wikipediaalways cost a lot less than Rockstar’s open-world crime novels.

Also thanks to strong sales on Xbox Series X and PS5– the version for the two next-gen consoles was only released in March 2022 – that’s another five million more than in the last report from Take-Two. Overall, the entire Grand Theft Auto series breaks the sound barrier of 375 million games; quite passable when you consider how the brainwave of the Lemmings inventors once committed his first crimes from a bird’s eye view…

Rockstar’s second cash cow is still a long way off, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is now selling 44 million; and it didn’t even need versions for several hardware generations.
