Knights of the Old Republic: Saber Interactive involved in the remake

As Embracer Group announced in its latest financial report, the developers at Saber Interactive have joined work on the upcoming remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Saber Interactive will be working with Aspyr on the new edition, which is due to be released for PC and PlayStation 5.

Aspyr Media is currently working on a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which first appeared in 2003. The studio is already familiar with the game and has released mobile ports of the classic and its sequel in the past. Now it has been announced that another studio will help Aspyr with the remake.

Two studios working on ‘massive product’

As Embracer Group states in its latest financial report, Aspyr Media and Evil Dead developer Saber Interactive will be working together on the project. Aspyr was acquired by the Swedish Embracer Group in February 2021 and was then assigned to the Saber Interactive division. Most recently, the Embracer Group made headlines with the takeover of the Square Enix studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal.

“Aspyr has worked hard to make the best game they can make. When we acquired Aspyr, we knew from the start that they would need our support [und] Saber has tremendous experience developing these types of products,” said Embracer Group Board Member Matthew Karch. “We’re confident that the game will be amazing. But it’s a huge product, and huge products take a lot of effort and a lot of time to get good. Especially if it’s a game that’s already old – very old. We basically had to develop the game from scratch,” Karch continued, before assuring that we’d be hearing more about the game “over the next few months.”

“We have worked closely with Lucasfilm Games on classic Star Wars games for years. This experience has instilled in our team a deep love and respect for these timeless titles, as well as a unique perspective on how to translate them into the modern age,” wrote Aspyr’s Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell at the game’s announcement last year.
