From WoW 2 to NOLF 3: We would like a sequel to these games

A lot is happening in the games industry these days. Authorities check them Acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, Bungie is cozying up to Sony and the Embracer Group welcomes Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal and Eidos Montreal studios. With these three deals alone, so many well-known game franchises have ended up in the hands of new managers that my ears are ringing with anticipation. I see the changed situations optimistically and as a great opportunity that long-spurned classics will be brought out of the dusty cellars and continued with a worthy sequel. And if you believe the rumor mill, more deals could follow at any time – about by Sony.

We play “Wish for a game sequel!”

Let’s take the current very turbulent times as an opportunity to discuss game brands that deserve a sequel for a variety of reasons. We had already touched on the subject very superficially when we looked at all the Activision franchises that will soon be owned by Microsoft could. In addition, there was already a special on the subject in 2016: For which online role-playing game would you like a sequel? Since no one has listened to our wishes in recent years, one or the other MMO will certainly appear in this article. If you think sequels are stupid per se because completely new games are always much better: My wish list for games announcements for 2021 is unfortunately still very relevant.

Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars

Let’s start with a game that you probably didn’t expect. In fact, 1996’s Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars was one of the main reasons I made me the SNES Mini gained weight. Back then I was too young to get import games for the SNES. And since I’ve only ever played Wii and Wii U with friends myself, it was only with the Mini that I was able to catch up on the role-playing game from Square and Nintendo.

Of course, you could say that Super Mario RPG gave birth to Nintendo’s other two RPG series: Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. Still, based on my experience with the original, I’d love to play a modern sequel for the Nintendo Switch. Gladly again in cooperation with Square Enix. Maybe after the completion of Final Fantasy XVI, Naoki Yoshida will feel like applying his Final Fantasy formula to the popular Plumber and Mushroom Land.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3

I am delighted that Aspyr and Lucasfilm are currently working on a Reboot of Star Wars: The Old Republic work. But I hope it doesn’t stop there! There just can’t be enough really good role-playing games in the Star Wars universe. And if the KotOR remake were to have a similar impact as the first part of the FFVII reboot, Embracer might want to build on the success and commission a real third part. Until then, we can use the waiting time with the three new Star Wars games from Respawn drive out, keyword: Jedi: Fallen Order 2.

Unfortunately, Silent Hill: Downpour from 2012 was only a shadow of the first games that I played up and down on the Playstation consoles at the time. After that, disappointingly, nothing exciting happened with the series. And that I’m not the only one who thinks that’s a pity is shown by the countless rumors that have been talking about a new part or a new edition for many years – certainly also fueled by the PT demo by Kojimawhich caused a sensation in 2014 but had to be removed after the project was canceled.

the current rumors looks like this: Bloober Team is said to be working on a remake of Silent Hill 2. There is also talk of a completely new Silent Hill and a “Side Stories” spinoff. No matter what is actually announced at the end: It is only important to me that the responsible developers work out the strengths of the series and serve me a wacky horror trip that makes me cringe immediately when the radio hisses or something crunches, grinds or groans.

Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Half-Life 3

Sometimes I just want to shake and yell at Valve in general and Gabe Newell in particular. The clever minds behind Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Dota 2 earn so much money every year with Steam alone that they could literally flood us with further game highlights. Instead, they’re throwing their fortunes at gadget gadgets like Steam Link, Steam Controllers, Steam Machines, HTC Vice, Valve Index, and most recently, Steam Deck.

On the gaming front, on the other hand, things have looked very mixed in recent years. The impressive VR game Half-Life: Alyx was able to alleviate the pain that Half-Life 3 is still missing. Otherwise there was only the card game Artifact and the auto-chess variant Dota Underlords. I would really like to see sequels for Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Half-Life 2 because of the high quality of the predecessors. Especially since the spark at Back 4 Blood did not want to skip last year.
