One Piece: This crazy twist on the new movie RED sounds great
The next movie based on the acclaimed anime One Piece: RED will be released later this year (2022) with a brand new adventure from Luffy & co., but will also bring a really wacky twist for the Straw Hats’ ship.
In One Piece, the Straw Hats are the linchpin of the story, but their ship – the Thousand Sunny – is essentially another member of the crew. It has served her faithfully since the Water Seven Arc, bringing the Straw Hats safely through the most dangerous of adventures. In fact, it’s been a good 15 years since Sunny and the Straw Hats got together! And yet the upcoming film brings One Piece: RED a crazy twist that has never been thought possible before: The Thousand Sunny comes to life!

We’re still talking about a romantic description here that has a life of its own – the ship literally becomes a small humanoid creature with the lion figurehead for a head. A sketch from the official Twitter account for the one-piece film shows what it will look like:

The fans are now of course in great excitement. While some just find the little Sunny creature cute with his thick plauze and belt, others only see the stuff of nightmares in the expressionless eyes without eyebrows. And a third faction thinks both at the same time. The comments section on the One Piece subreddit is a roller coaster of emotions. What is One Piece: RED about?
There is not much information about the story of One Piece: RED yet, but some key data make the film interesting already:
- The Straw Hats visit an island where a music festival is being held.
- There they meet the famous singer Utawho apparently wants to get Luffy to give up his life as a pirate
- Uta is the estranged daughter of legendary pirate Shanks, who is also said to appear.
- Trafalgar Law, Bartolomeo and Bepo are other pirates who make an appearance in the film.
- Various marine members also play a role, such as Akainu, Koby and Helmeppo.
