Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is finally set to make a hated matchmaking feature better

MW 2 should finally make SBMM better.

MW 2 should finally make SBMM better.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – this year’s installment in the hit shooter series – will feature a single-player campaign, but the highlight for most of you should again be the multiplayer. The reinterpretation of the classic from 2009 should reissue some popular maps and also take over various other elements from the original. Of course, the little-loved matchmaking feature SBMM is also included again, but this year it should attract less attention.

CoD: Modern Warfare 2 has SBMM, but reportedly less intrusive

What is SBMM actually? SBMM stands for “Skill-Based Match-Making”. As the name suggests, the feature puts players of a similar skill level into a match. This has always been the case in ranked matches, but the technology is being used more and more in other modes as well. Online shooters are regularly criticized for SBMM – this does not only apply to CoD, but as the industry leader, the franchise is of course particularly under scrutiny.

This is why SBMM is so critically discussed in the CoD community: SBMM has become a topic, especially in recent years, and the feature has existed in CoD since 2007, i.e. since Modern Warfare (via eSports). However, the system works more and more effectively, which makes the effect more noticeable. The problem: balanced games can be fun, but sometimes it’s just fun to play against weaker or stronger opponents.

Skill-based matchmaking divides the community

This is how SBMM should get better in Modern Warfare 2

That’s why the balancing in MW 2, according to the well-known CoD leaker Ralph’s valve a little softened. Only absolute beginners and real professionals should keep to themselves in the future to avoid frustration. The large mass in the middle, on the other hand, should be mixed up more colorfully again. If you play well for a while, you won’t be “rewarded” right away by drawing better opponents.

The problem with the “Smurfs”: So-called “smurfs” should also be handled better. These are players with a second account. In this way, they can trick SBMM and be matched with weaker opponents despite a high skill level. The system should be able to detect such violations and exchange those affected by bots during a game.
