Elden Ring: status effects, effects and how to heal them

the Status Effects in Elden Ring are special types of physical impairments that can affect you and opponents (mobs, NPC invaders, human players, bosses) alike.

The range of debilitating effects that can affect your health and that of your opponents or bosses ranges from bleeding to poisoning and madness. Each status effect has a specific cure and preventative utility to help manage and limit exposure in the first place.

In this guide we show all status effects in Elden Ring, what they do and what you can do about them.

  • Locations of the talismans: Some talismans increase your resistance to the status effects or have other helpful effects that counteract them.
  • Bottle of Miraculous Medicine: You can use the bottle and crystal tears found to create medicinal mixtures. For example, the Spotted Hardened Tear increases all resistances and heals all status effects.

How to recognize a status effect in Elden Ring

Status effects are announced by such a bar (here: scarlet rot).

A status effect is announced by a horizontal bar that overlays your character in a clearly visible way and gradually fills up:

How quickly this bar fills up depends on your resistance to the effect. Resistance to status effects can be increased (and the gauge growth rate slowed) by:

  • Equipped equipment: e.g. armor set, shields, talismans.
  • consumables like meat.
  • Bottle of wondrous medicine with corresponding crystal tears that counteract the status effect.

If the status bar is completely filled, the status effect only breaks out and affects the health of the character. The status bar will slowly decay or disappear completely if you use the appropriate boluses that counteract these effects.

These four resistances affect how well protected you are against the status effects.

frost

If you are affected by a frost effect, you will suffer considerable damage to the life bar. In addition, the character’s damage reduction and the speed at which their stamina is restored decrease. Enemies that trigger Frost include Deathrite Bird and Borealis, the Frost Mist.

  • Mitigated by: Increased sturdiness (increases stamina with points invested).
  • Preventive Effect: Smoked Invigorating Meat, Smoked Invigorating White Meat, Smoked Speckled Meat, Smoked Speckled White Meat.
  • Healable with: Frost Thaw Boluses, Spotted Hardened Tear, Law of Regression Invocation, Flame Heal Me! Invocation, Bestial Resilience Invocation.

insanity

The status effect insanity you encounter especially with the nomadic traders when you attack and fight them. They use madness to wreak havoc on you. An attack with Insanity triggering effect both deals base damage and fills an orange bar. Once it’s full, you’ll take another heavy hit, making Insanity one of the worse status effects.

  • Mitigated by: Focus increase (increases with points invested in Spirit).
  • Preventive Effect: Smoked Clarity Meat, Smoked Speckled Meat, Smoked Speckled White Meat, Smoked Clarity White Meat.
  • Cures include: Clarifying Boluses, Spotted Hardened Tear, Clarity Sorcery.

Sleep

Sleep isn’t a status effect you often feel from enemies. There are only a few enemies that trigger this (such as crabs in Raya Lucaria’s academy). Accordingly, sleep is more interesting for the attack if you want to take the wind out of an opponent’s sails. What happens here is simple: the opponent nods off and is open to a violent attack.

  • Mitigated by: Focus increase (increases with points invested in Spirit).
  • Preventive Effect: Smoked Clarity Meat, Smoked Speckled Meat, Smoked Speckled White Meat, Smoked Clarity White Meat.
  • Healable with: Stimulating Boluses, Spotted Hardened Tear, Law of Regression Invocation, Clarity Sorcery.
