selection

With the conclusion of the conference of the honorary Scientific Commission of the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD), 425 monument owners throughout the country can look forward to funding for their planned building project. Experts from the areas of monument preservation and art sciences advise the DSD board on the selection of funding projects. As in previous years, the foundation would like to support another 50 to 100 monuments this time. That depends primarily on the amount of donations raised by the end of the year, the income from the trustee foundations in the DSD and the special-purpose income from the Lottery GlücksSpirale, whose beneficiaries include the German Foundation for Monument Protection. DSD’s 2022 funding year officially began with the sending of the positive commitments.

Steinfeld Monastery

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the German Foundation for Monument Protection wants to support at least 38 monuments this year, including the Potentinus statue in the Steinfeld Monastery basilica. Steinfeld Monastery was made widely known by the “apple saint” Hermann Josef (1150-1241), who lived and worked here. The three-aisled pillar basilica, built between 1142 and 1150, is considered one of the earliest German vaulted churches. The nave is complemented by a west building, a mighty crossing tower and a square chancel with a semi-circular apse. All styles of art from Romanesque to modern steel appliqués are worth seeing in the church. The colored, larger-than-life sculpture of St. Potentinus from the 15th century. The high-quality figure, worked in lively style, shows the saint in knightly garb with armor and cloak as an Aquitanian duke.
