No one wanted to play the least popular champ in LoL history, even if he won every match

No one wanted to play the least popular champ in LoL history, even if he won every match

There are now 159 champions in League of Legends. Some are very popular, others are rarely played. A LoL developer now explains which character was the least popular in the history of the MOBA: The old version of Urgoth was so unpopular that Riot had to completely overhaul the character in 2017.

What are the most disliked characters now? Typically, characters are considered extremely unpopular if they have a pick rate of less than 0.5%. As from an article by MGG shows, the current most disliked characters are:

  • Skarner at 0.41% – a Scorpio that likes to dig underground but is considered relatively sluggish
  • Auerelion Sol with 0.49% – a dragon that is considered difficult to play because it has to hit opponents with a thing that orbits around its body: it’s a mage that has to do melee combat

But the two “problem champs” are no comparison to the most disliked champ in LoL history: Urgot.

The “old Urgot” was strong but unpopular.

Nobody wanted to play Urgot, even if he was incredibly strong

What was the problem with Urgot? In his personal Twitch stream, LoL’s Lead Champion Designer August “Riot August” Browning spoke about the most disliked champ in the MOBA’s 13-year history.

He says the old version of Urgot (2010-2017) had such a weird combination of skills that it didn’t even feel like a part of League of Legends. He was a cross between a sniper and an attrition mage that just didn’t work.

Even the fun parts of his abilities, like his ultimate, didn’t really suit him, says Riot August.

Ultimately, Urgot was so caught between roles that he wouldn’t function properly in any position unless the meta played into his hands.

But it didn’t really matter if it worked in the meta or not: Urgot just wasn’t fun for the players. Some would have even dominated the SoloQ with him, but could neither pull it off nor establish a trend:

If you see Jinx in the pro league, then you want to play Jinx. When Akali has a 52% win rate, you can bet everyone will jump on the bandwagon. There are certain champions that everyone plays when they look good. Check out Kai’Sa, everyone is looking for a reason to play Kai’Sa right now.

But there are also champions like Aurelion Sol, who hardly anyone plays, even if he’s shown brilliantly by the pros.

Urgot was in a similar position back then: he could literally win every game, but nobody played him because he didn’t fit LoL. His skills contradicted each other and his unspecified role made him unattractive to many players.

The new Urgot stays on top of enemies and takes them out.

What did Riot do? In July 2017, RIot completely redesigned Urgot. All his abilities have been fundamentally changed:

  • The “Ancient Urgot” was a short-range sniper who had the ability to gain longer range if he hit with his E. It was based on lowering the damage of his opponents and making them more vulnerable to damage.
  • The “New Urgot” is a sort of walking death machine whose idea is to stay on top of an opponent, wearing them down with increasing damage, slowing them down and ultimately eliminating them.

How is Urgot now? Now, after 2017 and a major overhaul of his ability, Urgot is still a weird fantasy of a mechanical spider with traces of human traits, but he works: he appears in about 2.8% of all games now.
