Robot for deck maintenance: RoboDeck model to clean floorboards

from Sarah Petzold
Robot vacuums and lawn mowers have long been standard in smart households, but now there is also a robot that takes care of the terrace. The “RoboDeck” should not only clean wooden decking boards, but also be able to stain them. We explain what the strange product is all about.

Lawn mower robots are very popular and are now part of the inventory in many domestic gardens. The manufacturer RoboDeck is now taking the mowing robot principle to a new level and has presented a device that is intended to clean and care for wooden decking. For this purpose, the “RoboDeck” has a special cartridge that contains a mordant.

Strange subscription model and HomeKit integration

According to the manufacturer, the RoboDeck, for which a crowdfunding campaign will soon be launched on Kickstarter, is able to first clean the decking boards and then apply an oil polish to care for the boards. To do this, it has special sensors and edge detection to prevent the robot from accidentally falling.

The mordant that comes with the cartridge is said to cost $35. Alternatively, consumers can also purchase the product in a monthly subscription model for US$ 20. One cartridge is probably enough for 46 square meters. Whether users can also fill the cartridges with staining agent themselves remains an open question, as does the question of why users should stain their decking once a month at all (and not every six to twelve months, as is usually recommended).

As the editors of HomekitNews report, the RoboDeck should also support Apple’s HomeKit as well as Alexa and Google Assistant. It remains to be seen whether and to what extent this will work – after all, conventional vacuum robots already have problems integrating HomeKit. By the way, when the RoboDeck will come onto the market is currently just as little certain as a concrete sales price.
