Vampires in V Rising have OCD and this is the best feature ever

V Rising compulsively count

In V Rising you play a vampire – a motif that is rarely used in video games. However, the new indie game uses some prejudices from folklore instead of depicting vampires as purely blood-thirsty beasts. This results in some interesting mechanics and one of the best features you could wish for in a survival game – believes MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus.

If you want to empty your pockets and fill your chests quickly and easily in V Rising, you can do this easily with a button. In the inventory you have the function “compulsively count”.

With one click, you sort all the items in your inventory into the open chest if at least one of them is already in the chest. So if you’ve just come back from hunting cotton for threads, a push of a button is enough and the inventory is empty again.

Sorting in chests is a great agony in many survival games. Especially in clans and groups with several players, there is always one chaotic person who simply empties his inventory in the next chest and simply destroys every order.

A click on “compulsively count” is enough to give away all the items of which there is already one in the box – and ONLY these!

V Rising remedies this with a very simple feature that is so clever that every survival game should have it. Only in V Rising does it even make sense, because according to the mythical world, vampires actually have an obsessive-compulsive disorder, which explains exactly all of this.

Vampire prejudices provide innovative features

What does this have to do with obsessive-compulsive disorder? According to folklore, vampires suffer from an obsessive-compulsive disorder called arithmomania. This causes vampires to have to morbidly count everything that can be counted.

According to legends, this should even go so far that you can kill vampires with a bowl of sunflower seeds or rice. If you dump the bowl in front of them, they have to count every seed – even if the sun comes up and burns them.

Incidentally, this obsessive-compulsive disorder also explains why Count Number from Sesame Street is a vampire of all things. Bram Stoker, like a vampire expert, really did away with the prejudice in popular literature with his famous Dracula in an interview with the daily mirror explained.

During my literature studies, I also dealt with folklore and legends. Vampires weren’t one of my core subjects, but I kept getting lost in this corner of the library.

Vampires are an exciting topic, which is why I also learned the legends and myths about bloodsuckers in my free time. Much of the information listed here comes from my knowledge base. Keep in mind, however, that these are always legends and traditions from the people and that they can change and differ significantly over time. You can also find more information about vampire myths on the Site of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh.

V Rising plays with even more prejudices surrounding the undead. Of course, vampires are best known as bloodsuckers, so it’s all about blood. There are about 6 different blood types that empower you in different ways.

Additionally, vampires are portrayed as classic villains who like to treat humans like cattle—although some less sadistic players may object. Surrounding the whole vampire mythology, however, are more mechanics at play:

  • to rest, you lie down in a coffin in the classic way
  • Garlic weakens you, which is why many people have garlic hanging on their doors
  • Silver burns you, which can be deadly if you just pick it up carelessly – and of course, out of caution, people all only pay with silver coins
  • if you stay in the sun too long, you will get burned. That’s why you should only start really big raids at night or hope for a lot of shade
  • sacred symbols—often represented simply by Christian crosses in folklore—stop you, and consecrated ground kills you quickly
  • It is said that vampires can transform themselves and so in V Rising we have various forms such as wolf, bear or rat available

There is still a popular belief in folklore that vampires must untie every knot they come across. We don’t see any of that in V Rising, but the yarn balls and spools are all rolled up remarkably meticulously…

Also, vampires supposedly don’t have a mirror image. But we can build mirrors to customize our appearance. Also, they can only actually enter houses if they are invited – and considering how often we go looting, it remains to be seen how much is really to it.

But while we were on the subject of blood, tell us: Which blood do you actually like to drink the most?
