MultiVersus alluded to: finally a worthy Super Smash Bros for Xbox and PlayStation?

MultiVersus alluded to: finally a worthy Super Smash Bros for Xbox and PlayStation?

One or the other has squinted enviously at Nintendo and its Smash Bros series in the past. Comparable games were rarely found on the other consoles and if they were, they were often not the best of the bunch. Now Warner, among others, dares to try and grabs its extensive portfolio of well-known brands with both hands to unite them in MultiVersus. The result can be seen.

Throwing together numerous brands like DC, Looney Tunes, Game of Thrones and so on in one game sounds like a way to make quick money. Given MultiVersus’ free-to-play model, it’s likely that many more characters will follow in the future. But none of this is of any use if the basics are not correct. In that regard, the MultiVersus Closed Alpha offers some hope.

Based on the days I’ve played MultiVerse, I can already say that it feels good. And the title still has some development time ahead of it. All the better if you collect feedback early on in the context of alpha and also an upcoming beta. 15 characters were available during the closed alpha and they already represented a ragtag franchise from Warner Bros.

Game of Looney Tunes

We have Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes, the DC Universe is represented by Batman and Superman, Tom and Jerry do the honors, as well as Garnet from Steven Universe and Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. Given what else Warner has in its portfolio, such as the Flintstones, Matrix, Mad Max, and others, there are many other potential characters. It could be an important factor in longevity.

The eye for detail cannot be denied even now. Each character is voiced, and for the majority of them, that’s the voice actors you associate with them. We hear John DiMaggio and Jerermy Shada in Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and Maisie Williams also lends her voice to Arya Stark in MultiVersus. Jake even lets you unlock Cake as an additional skin, and here’s the original voice actress on board.

A few wild combinations are possible.

It goes so far that depending on who you’re fighting, you’ll hear different comments from the characters. But all those gimmicks and details are of little use if it’s gameplay wrong and feels disastrous. The good news is that’s not the case. Of course, MultiVerse isn’t a 1:1 clone of Nintendo’s brawler, but it’s close enough. The fighters are easy to handle and there is a satisfying feeling in beating up opponents and landing hits. Like Smash Bros, it’s all about weakening your competitors until you can knock them off the edge of the screen.

If you want to leave your opponents an individual message, you have the opportunity to do so. You can customize whether an animation is played. What could be nicer than dismissing an opponent from the fight with a “That’s all folks”? Schadenfreude as a gameplay element, if you will.

A competent performance by MultiVersus

The individual characters are each divided into five categories with their own moves, from tanks to supporters to magicians. For example, Taz has the ability to turn enemies into a defenseless fried chicken for a short time if he hits them enough times. Added to this are the effective team moves, with which you can help your teammates out of a dangerous situation or initiate strong attacks. This promotes interaction in corresponding game variants in which not everyone plays against everyone else.

Depending on who you play with, total chaos can of course also break out like in Smash Bros. But you wouldn’t expect otherwise. But overall it’s a lot of fun. The animations look smooth, the moves are well thought out and the merging of numerous brands could attract players. Especially since MultiVersus is free, you can download it for free. In the background is a rollback net code that has worked well so far, which at least in the closed alpha did not cause any problems, MultiVersus has its back.

Everyone plays against everyone, but team modes are also available.

There is a lot of potential in MultiVersus. The question is how far Warner is willing to go all out and support the game. It is clear that there is a battle pass system with free and premium tiers. And it can probably be assumed that things won’t be unlocked as quickly later on at launch as they were in the Closed Alpha. After all, Warner wants to make money, so it remains to be seen how this system develops.

Ultimately, MultiVersus made for entertaining matches in the closed alpha and demonstrated its potential as a brawler. Anyone who longs for a Smash Bros-like game on PC, PlayStation or Xbox should take a closer look at the title at the next opportunity or at the latest when it is released. In terms of appeal, it could become a real contender thanks to the numerous brands. Let’s see what else the beta and launch bring.
