The Daltons have broken out again and are making the Wild West unsafe. They didn’t reckon with the cowboy, who can move faster than his own shadow…

In addition to the Asterix series, Lucky Luke is probably one of the most well-known European comic series. I was fascinated by this character as a child, and of course by the idea of the Wild West with bank robberies, stagecoach robberies, Indian robberies… Luckily things weren’t quite so wild in reality: A look at the history books reveals that it was mostly the Indians were that were ambushed, but that’s another story.

5371

What’s up with this number? You can wake me up in the middle of the night wearing a pink bunny suit and tell me some cheese – I would take it for granted and it would take me a few minutes to realize something was wrong. But if you were to ask me for this number – 5371 – I would know immediately what is meant. This number is burned into my memory! So what is this ominous number all about? If you are patient, you will find out. Yes, ok, or you can already guess. It’s pretty simple. But more on that later.

The humor in the comics is pretty stupid. So exactly my thing.

Even as a child, I loved European comics, especially Tintin, Asterix and the Digedags (yeah, ok, nobody knows, it doesn’t matter). But I also had a lot of fun with the cowboy, who could shoot faster than his own shadow. The Lucky Luke comics were characterized by many typical Wild West elements (yes, it’s also a Western), but also by many allusions and parodies.

Anyone who deals with the Wild West in general will quickly stumble across names like Billy the Kid, JesseJames or Calamity Jane. They all appear in one Lucky Luke story or another, as do real events like the construction of the railroad tracks or the Alaskan Gold Rush. And of course many Western films were the inspiration; for example, in one story, the bounty hunter Elliot Belt appears, who a certain Lee VanCleef looks suspiciously similar…

Each Dalton gets their own hole in the wall. They’ve done this kind of nonsense before. No wonder they keep getting caught.

On the hunt for criminals

When the Daltons break out, it’s Lucky Luke, of course, who sets out to recapture the gangsters. First we fight our way through Yuma and engage in a duel arranged by the local undertaker. Then we go to the prison from which the Daltons escaped and free the warden. We continue to the saloon of Coyote Gulch, where a certain Fingers is up to mischief. We must defeat him to find out where the Daltons fled to. In an abandoned mine we face Averell, who doesn’t want to tell us where his brothers fled to – but does it anyway, after all it’s Averell. Continue to the Pacific Railroad. In the ambushed train we defeat Jack Dalton.

But William and Joe are still on the run. We end up in a fort that was attacked by the Indians. In a duel with an Indian warrior, we learn that William is being held prisoner in the Indian village. There we have to undergo various tests and in the end we get the captured William. Joe, on the other hand, has retreated to another prison, where the final fight takes place. In the end, the Daltons end up behind bars again while the lonely cowboy moves farther afield…

We pursue the Daltons through a canyon while fending off dynamite and falling rocks.

Side scroller in the wild west

at lucky luke for the SNES it is a typical jump-and-run, although the jumping is limited. Of course there are also jumps (which can sometimes be really tough), but mostly it’s more about climbing somewhere or jumping on a roof. Shooting is at the heart of the game; depending on our reactions, we can shoot in any direction. Enemies can spawn anywhere, mostly behind windows or boxes. However, there is no killing in this game, instead opponents are disarmed or eliminated. Defeated enemies often drop items that can help us.

This includes ammunition, an extra life, dynamite or a sheriff’s star, which gives us another hitpoint – we have four hitpoints in total, so we can be hit three times, the fourth time we lose a life and usually have to start over. A B symbol can also be collected in each level, which we can then use to win extra lives and ammunition in a randomly selected bonus game. This includes, for example, an arm wrestling against Lucky Luke’s famous horse Jolly Jumper.
