Cyberpunk 2077: possibly just an expansion, story leak with spoiler alert

from Thilo Bayer
Half of the CDPR developers are currently working on the first expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. It could also be the last. Meanwhile there is already a leak.

As part of the latest business results, CDPR not only announced a new status for The Witcher 4, but also provided an update to Cyberpunk 2077. Half of the developers are working on large, story-based expansions. Meanwhile there is already a story leak.

Just an expansion planned?

As CD PR announces, the “majority of production capacity has shifted to the development of a large, story-driven expansion for Cyberpunk, which we expect to release next year”. In a graphic showing the distribution of development teams in current projects, you can see that exactly half of all developers are working on the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. For comparison: For support and the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 it is now less than 10 percent of developers. As of December 31, 2020, a good 60 percent of developers were still working on the topic.

confusion a statement by CEO Adam Kiciński. He says literally that the expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 is “the last product based on the RED engine”. All future projects will use the Unreal Engine. This suggests that CDPR is only developing one expansion for Cyberpunk and not at least two as originally announced. PCGH is in contact with CDPR to clarify this. As soon as there is an answer, we will update this article.

It would be a small surprise, but not entirely unexpected. The story expansion should appear “according to the current plan” in 2023, a second expansion would slide towards 2024 or later. Cyberpunk 2077’s bug fixing, which has lasted far too long, has turned the internal schedule and roadmaps upside down. Promised free DLCs are still missing and there is currently no more talk of the planned multiplayer.

CDPR shouldn’t like it at all that alleged leaks can be found on the internet, spanning “hundreds of lines of dialogue” from the first expansion, seemingly outlining the entire main storyline of the quests. The leaks apparently come from data mining attempts of the last game patch. There are apparently seven main missions set in a new section of the Pacifica region. At this point we do not want to go into the leaks any further, if you are not afraid of spoilers, you will find further links on the subject at the linked source at VGC.
