My grandmother was right. She always said, “Boy, the only certainty in life is death.” As scary as that sounds, it’s true. Grandma knew how things worked – just not that the grandson would play professionally one day. But she sure would think that was cool.

Ever since the first touch of the joypad, I’ve been on first-name terms with digital death. I’ve “died” countless times. Whether I jump man fallen from ladders Zaxxon smashed against walls, in Horizon – Forbidden West landed in a scavenger’s mouth or in The Legend of Zelda felt with a Bokblin spear. There was almost always death in games. Not to mention collective death. I have buried countless role-playing groups in dark dungeons or given them permadeath in the case of failed revivals. game over And it wasn’t just my own avatar that bit the dust: I wiped out entire civilizations in various 4X games, murdered aliens, sent large numbers of foreign flora and fauna to nirvana. There is probably so much digital blood on my hands that it is enough to fill Lake Constance many times.
