Elden Ring Theory: Melina is much more than our mysterious companion

Melina is an important but also a very mysterious person.

Melina is our sole companion as we journey through the Elden Ring’s in-between and plays a pivotal role in key scenes. Despite this, she remains a very mysterious character that we don’t learn much about in the game. Lore expert Vaatividya devotes a chapter to her in one of his latest videos, offering intriguing theories about her origins and relationships to important characters.

A powerful family

It’s all about this: Fingermaiden Melina follows in the footsteps of companions in previous FromSoftware games. She helps us to be able to master the path we have taken and leaves us, for example, the spectral steed Stormwind. We can even summon her to an important story boss and convince ourselves that she is a capable fighter.

Melina might be a demigod herself: But that’s not all. Vaatividya deals with her in his video about Elden Rings Demigods – because, according to his theory, she is probably a demigod as well. The YouTuber is almost certain that our mysterious companion is a daughter of the god queen Marika.

Her name in the game files suggests that. This is “MaricaOfDaughter”. In addition, as Vaati explains, some lines of dialogue point to this family connection. Melina mentions the word “mother” several times and reports that she was born in the earth tree.

Siblings and Butterflies

All Demigods in Elden Ring are direct descendants of Queen Marika. However, some of them have different fathers. For example, Godrick is Godfrey’s son, while the twins, Malenia and Miquella, trace back to Radagon – who, according to another theory, is a different form of Marika himself.

Vaati also attributes Melina to this admittedly somewhat odd and confusing connection. So she would be a sister of the twins. Linked to this statement, the YouTuber offers another theory that he admits is a bit far-fetched. Nonetheless, it is extremely interesting.

Three kinds of butterflies – three siblings? There are three types of butterflies in the game that can be collected and used for crafting. The Aeonian butterfly can be assigned to Malenia. According to his description, according to legend, he descended from the wings of the goddess of decay.

According to Vaati’s theory, Melina is a sister of Malenia.

The juvenile butterfly “looks like it has just hatched all its life”. This gives a clue to Miquella and his eternally childlike form. It also fits the cocoon in which it slumbers.
