Hatsune Miku's first PC game is colourful, moody and has just the right sense of rhythm

Virtual pop idol Hatsune Miku recently made her debut on PC. With Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ On May 26th, the world’s first computer version of a rhythm game starring Miku was released – at least the first game that doesn’t have to be played in VR. In the video above you can see my first encounter with Project DIVA Mega Mix+, which is currently one of the largest collections in the franchise. Not only Hatsune Miku himself will be there, but also the virtual singers Kagamine Rin, Megurine Luka, MEIKO, Yowane Haku, Akita Neru, Kasane Teto and singers Kagamine Len and KAITO.

For those who haven’t heard, we would like to state that Hatsune Miku no Vocaloid is more. Since 2019, her voice has not been part of Yamaha’s software, but now uses a different program. The developers therefore decided not to tie Miku to a program, but simply to identify her as a virtual singer.

The rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ offers one of the largest collections of the idol from Japan on the PC with over 170 songs. The music includes many well-known tracks, such as “World Is Mine” by Supercell, but also new singles. As always, the songs are a colorful mixture of different artists in all kinds of genres. These vary from ballads to dubstep to rock. The PC version is strongly based on the elements of the mega mix game the Nintendo Switch. A VIP version adds 72 more tracks from the PlayStation game Future Tone added. Both versions allow you to freely switch visual effects between the pop look of Mega Mix and the high-fidelity style of Future Tone. In addition, you can customize Hatsune Miku and her friends with over 500 outfits, accessories and hairstyles in the way you would like to see them on stage.

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ is not only about hitting the right keys in the rhythm, but also about designing an entire concert including outfits and a set list for the virtual singers.

As you can see in the first video, controlling the PC with a mouse and keyboard was not always easy for me. If you feel the same way, you can always switch to the controller. You can swap the layouts for the different consoles with one keystroke. In general, Mega Mix+ makes navigating the user interface easy. The menu may be colourful, but it is also large, clearly laid out and, in principle, even minimalistic – because only the highlights of the game appear in the menu overview. In English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean or German you can play the rhythm game, create your own playlists, go online or restyle your characters with one click. But the gameplay doesn’t make it any less complex: With the increasing level of difficulty, you start to sweat more and more for the perfect combos. And not only the music selection is huge, but also the styling offers tons of options. With your own playlists, you also have endless possibilities to stage the characters and organize their concerts yourself.

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega Mix+ costs in the Standard version €39.99 and €59.99 as VIP edition including 72 additional songs and access to all content unlocked in the standard edition.
