The best Star Trek games

star trek is huge and it keeps growing. Basically an ideal playground for game developers to let off steam – there is undoubtedly enough starting material. The Trek universe has been a little quieter in the gaming industry lately, but there have been some great games over the years. And also pipe bursts.

But the latter is not the point here, because we are addressing the question of what the best Star Trek games are? Below we have the answers for you in our list:

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary (1992 – PC, NES, Amiga)

Let’s start with a real classic. 25th Anniversary is a classic point-and-click adventure about Captain Kirk’s crew. You command the Enterprise and not only do the point-and-click tasks mentioned, but also fly through space with your spaceship. Use your phasers and photon torpedoes to take on enemy ships.

When you’re not flying through space, you’re beaming to different worlds, exploring the area and solving puzzles. All this in an equally classic pixel look that was typical of the time. And with the original voices of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. If you have a soft spot for adventures and are a Trekkie, you should take a look.

On the road with Kirk and Co.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity (1995 – PC)

Let’s continue with Adventures, but travel a generation further. Here you experience an adventure with Captain Picard’s crew aboard the Enterprise-D, which receives a distress call from a Garidian scout ship near the neutral zone. The Enterprise is asked to help find a scroll to prevent such a war.

As it turns out, there’s more to all of this though, and it’s about an ancient and powerful structure that the Romulans and Chodak, among others, are after. The Klingons, Ferengi and Borg also have appearances in the game. You complete away missions as you visit different planets, solving a few puzzles along the way. Story-wise, A Final Unity takes place around the same time as the seventh season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The next generation can do it too.

Star Trek: Birth of the Federation (1999 – PC)

In Star Trek: The Next Generation – Birth of the Federation you gradually take control of the galaxy. You can choose to take control of the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans, the Cardassians, or the Ferengi. With them you spread out in the Milky Way and secure the services of smaller species.

Aside from that, you do what you do in games like this. Colonize new planets, get your hands on star systems, build fleets and wage one or two wars. Of course, each faction has different characteristics and you will also have to deal with the Borg from time to time. Writing about it like this, I would wish for a modern 4X strategy game set in the Star Trek universe.

Spread out in the galaxy.

Star Trek: Armada (2000 – PC)

More strategy in the Star Trek universe, but this time in real time. Star Trek Armada is a classic real-time strategy game including base building, in which you collect resources and expand and improve your headquarters. Ultimately, of course, you build spaceships and send your fleets into battle against others. As mentioned, classic RTS concept à la WarCraft, just in space.

The scene of the action is the Alpha Quadrant, which is in a state of war. You can play on the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Borg sides. Armada is one of the few strategy games in the Trek universe, but it does a great job and still keeps the classic RTS elements that make it so playable. A real delight for fans.

Classic real-time strategy.

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (2000 – PC, PlayStation 2)

A first-person shooter in the Star Trek universe? At first glance, this may not fit the peaceful thoughts behind Star Trek, but there is often enough shooting in the series and films. And since this is about a special team, the Hazard Team, aboard the USS Voyager, it makes sense.

Because when you’re stuck in the Delta Quadrant, you could use a special squad. Unfortunately, he was never involved in the series itself, but in Elite Force you take on the Borg, among others, after the Voyager is held captive in a kind of spaceship junkyard. In the well-established Quake 3 arena engine, you will fight many different opponents in a well-done shooter that shows that Star Trek and this genre fit together very well.

A bit dusty, but still playable.

Star Trek: Bridge Commander (2002 – PC)

Finally take command of the Enterprise yourself. Star Trek: Bridge Commander is one of the games that do exactly that. From the Captain’s Chair you give orders to the bridge crew from the first-person perspective and you have to live with the consequences that said orders have on the course of the mission.

Among other things, you choose different maneuvers, decide whether you prefer to act loudly or unobtrusively, and you have to take care of the individual ship systems. You follow the action on the big screen in front of you, just like Captain Picard and Co do. Incidentally, DC Fontana, who wrote four episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and was an associate producer of the series, was involved as a script writer, editor and consultant.

Do it like this!

Star Trek: Bridge Crew (2017 – PC, PlayStation 4)

Again we take in the Captain’s Chair, again we play from the first person perspective. But this time not just on a flat screen, but with a virtual reality headset. Bridge Crew brings you a more immersive Star Trek experience aboard the USS Aegis than ever before.

Here, too, you make strategic decisions and coordinate the actions of your bridge crew. Your mission takes you to The Trench, which is an uncharted sector of space. The hope is to find a new home for the Vulcans there. However, the Klingons are also hanging around there and threaten to let the Federation’s plans fail. And that’s where you come in.

Command spaceships in VR.

Star Trek Online (2010 – PC, Xbox, PlayStation)

For more than ten years, the MMO Star Trek Online has kidnapped you into the Star Trek universe and lets you play there on the side of the Federation. If you want, you can also decide for the Klingons or for the Romulans. You put together your own character and start a career in the respective fleet. You start small and make it big, just like in any MMO.

You’ll meet numerous well-known characters from the series and go to places that are just as familiar, while experiencing a multitude of new adventures. As the game is quite a few years old, there is also a lot of content and story that has been added over the years. And new content updates continue to appear regularly, including the newer Star Trek series, for example. Even those who are just starting out can still discover a lot here.
