Fans are asking Sega to delay Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers: First gameplay too "Sonic: Breath of the Wild" (1)

In a partnership with IGN, Sega wants to keep sharing a few scenes from the upcoming open-world title Sonic Frontiers this month. So far we’ve gotten a pretty good idea of the title’s overall gameplay and combat system, but fans aren’t too happy overall with the franchise’s development. On Twitter did namely for a short time #DelaySonicFrontiers the round as players don’t expect Sega to deliver a presentable product by the end of this year.

Sonic Frontiers gameplay disappoints fans

YouTube itself no longer shows the number of dislikes, but with a few browser extensions it can be seen that the gameplay premiere has around 50,000 dislikes with around 70,000 likes. Even with the Combat trailer, these numbers don’t look any better with almost 20,000 dislikes to 35,000 likes.

The biggest points of criticism from users are probably the rather clumsy animations, the rather empty game world, and a much too slow Sonic. Also, some well-known YouTubers and streamers did like LonelyGoomba, Sam Procrastinates, MoistCr1TiKaL, and many others spread their anger. Sega stated in a past interview that Sonic Frontiers will be the basis for Sonic titles for the next 20 years, similar to Sonic Adventure in the past. Like the Twitter user DaveLuty notedSonic Frontiers has some weaknesses that Sonic Adventure 2 fixed decades ago.

Furthermore, some users would like a demo for the upcoming Sonic title so that they can get an impression of the gameplay and give any feedback. The idea of simply postponing Sonic Frontiers is probably not that bad in and of itself. Finally, there was similar feedback when Sonic’s first design from the film was unveiled. With the completely new design that Sonic was given, both Sonic the Hedgehog and its successor are quite popular in the gaming community.

As Sven Joseclyne, Global Publishing Director of IGN, however explained on Twitter, a simple delay may not be enough to solve the problems with Sonic Frontiers. For him, any bugs are not the main problem of the title, but the core concept of the new game. A super realistic Sonic title with a focus on the combat system is probably not what many fans wanted.
