Windows 11: Preview of beautified task manager with 22H2 update

from Norman Wittkopf
Microsoft will release the next major Windows 11 update in late summer or autumn. One of the more important innovations is the optically and functionally revised task manager.

Most of the innovations for the upcoming 22H2 version of Windows 11 have been known for a long time and Microsoft had already presented and justified the fundamental changes to the task manager. The website Windowslatest.com now has a look at the upcoming revision in a recent post thrownwhich will come up with WinUI, Fluent design, mica optics and more, among other things.

As is well known, the start page is redesigned and the tabs for “Processes”, “Performance” and Co., which were previously located at the top of the application, are moved to the side. This should make the task manager more tablet-friendly and “modern”. As can be seen on screenshots, the window now uses the “Mica” translucent theme material, which aims to match the background color of the app window or title bar to the desktop background to create a nice “color hierarchy”.

Mica and performance

However, the mica theme used in the new task manager is not a transparency effect, which is why the theme color of the desktop background is still displayed on the task manager’s title bar if another application such as Paint is open behind it. According to a Microsoft employee, this should not be at the expense of performance. The company emphasizes that performance is a top priority for the Windows 11 task manager overhaul and that they want to make sure “all these new features (mica and rounded corners) are super fast”.

In addition to the new tab layout and design, Microsoft has moved common actions like creating a new task, ending a task, and more to the top. These general actions change as you switch between tabs in Task Manager. Overall, the design looks similar to the current version, according to the report, but the background now also supports dark mode and there are rounded corners throughout.

New efficiency mode

The most important functional update of the task manager is the efficiency mode, which has also already been announced. This can be used, for example, to reduce the CPU load by minimizing the use of system resources on a per-process basis. This is said to be able to lead to faster responsiveness in the foreground and better energy efficiency. Task Manager’s efficiency mode leverages EcoQoS and limits the use of process resources by reducing process priority. How well the whole thing works should be seen for all users by October at the latest when the 22H2 update is expected to be released.
