HDMI 2.1a brings a new feature called “cable power“. Behind that hides the active power supply via HDMI cable without using an additional power cable. This should make using HDMI cables easier and also ensure that the more powerful “Ultra High Speed” HDMI cables can be correctly supplied with power. These are able to achieve higher transmission speeds.

To be able to use the HDMI Cable Power function, you need a suitable, active HDMI cable and an HDMI source device that supports the “HDMI Cable Power” function. The connection then works like a normal HDMI cable, however only in a certain direction. The correct orientation is marked accordingly on the cable.

HDMI cables with HDMI Cable Power also have a separate power connector for use with source devices that do not support the HDMI Cable Power feature. These connections are usually USB Micro-B or USB Type-Cbut other power connections can also be used.

So far, there are very few devices for private use that use this function. In the future, however, more and more source devices will support HDMI Cable Power in order to Long distance transmissions without signal loss to guarantee.

The button that has to be accessible could be an aesthetic killer in the living room for some people. If you can cope with that, the switch doesn't disappoint.
