All (not) E3 dates 2022 at a glance: These are the events in the coming days [Update: Steam Next Fest und E3]

As is well known, E3 2022 is canceled – the corona pandemic is still having an impact, even if major events are being permitted more and more frequently around the world. While the E3 organizers are looking to get going again in 2023, a few developers, publishers and organizers have loosely banded together for this year to have something of a “(not the) E3 week”. There are live streams, keynotes, showcases, announcements, reveals, presentations, events and everything you would expect from an E3 – just without the fixed frame.

It had already broken up a bit before the COVID crisis, because Electronic Arts and Sony, among others, gave up. Sony already held its State of Play last week; the EA Play doesn’t even take place; one of the gems – Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, was mentioned almost in passing the day and is set to be detailed in the coming months. So what’s to see this week? some! The events are somewhat fragmented without the E3 framework, however.

Of course, some big names are missing, which would also be expected at (not the) E3, but as already mentioned, the E3 fragmented even before the Corona crisis and participants like Ubisoft really seem to have the depth in the portfolio of the next six to to have twelve months. The French themselves hinted that the content pipeline might be a bit too thin for their own show; recently one had to fight more with reports about takeovers. A lot of content will be shown on one of the other bigger shows; Main Events is perhaps an exaggeration. But even for the Summer Games Fest, Geoff Keighley put the brakes on the hype train and emphasized that the majority of titles that have already been announced will be on display.

Steam Next Fest and E3 2023

Update 1 from 06/08/2022: There are no events today, but the Steam Next Fest, which starts on June 13th, is a new addition.

The organizers of E3, Electronic Entertainment Expo or ESA for short, have spoken. It is emphasized that E3 2023 should definitely take place after it has failed more than once due to COVID and threatens to lose further relevance. For many publishers and developers, things went just fine without the high costs associated with E3.

“We look forward to returning in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” ESA President and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis told the Washington Post. “As much as we love these digital events and as much as we love them reaching out to people and we want that global reach, we also know that there’s a really strong need for people to come together – to meet in person, to see each other and about it to talk about what makes games great.
