Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 apparently eschews controversy for controversy’s sake. At least it has now been announced in an interview that this year’s CoD should not contain a mission that resembles the “No Russian” level from the original Modern Warfare 2. That was certainly the case in the predecessor, but this time it will probably be different and there is at least partly a simple reason for that.

Modern Warfare 2 does not contain a mission like No Russian

That’s what it’s about: in one GamesBeat-Interview confirms developer studio Infinity Ward that in the upcoming CoD Modern Warfare 2 no level like the No Russian mission from the first Modern Warfare 2 awaits us. If you’re hoping or afraid that something similar will make its way into the game instead, it’s not meant to be.

Here you can watch the gameplay reveal for the next CoD from Summer Game Fest again:

What is this mission? No Russian is a mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009. In it you should gain the trust of terrorists by taking part in a massacre of civilians. You can choose to skip the level entirely, but if you don’t, you’ll witness a bloodbath of civilians – which you’re free to join in on.

Since then, the mission has been one of the most controversial in video game history and has been the subject of heated debate. The whole thing started all over again when the single player campaign was remastered again in 2020. This also included the mission and made it even more difficult to endure thanks to the improved, more realistic graphics.

The whole thing was crowned with the soft reboot of the Modern Warfare series 2019. In it, the tradition of controversy was apparently deliberately continued and, among other things, we were presented with a mission in which we play a child in a poison gas attack. In the run-up it was said that the creators deliberately wanted to orientate themselves on No Russian:

It’s because: The main reason why we are spared such missions this time is that we are not dealing with a remake or remaster here – although the game is called the same. Instead, we are treated to the sequel to the 2019 reboot Modern Warfare, which is only very roughly based on the story events from the earlier parts.
