Street Fighter 6 Preview: Totally Different From Anything Before!
Away from the classic comic style, away from classic brawls, away from the classic engine: With Street Fighter 6, Capcom wants to redefine the fighting game genre, according to their own statements. Despite the big changes, long-established fans should still get their money’s worth. The series finally took to the big stage for the first time in 1987. Of course, the series has continued to develop with the following parts, but the changes that the Japanese developer studio has planned for the next year can already be seen as a small revolution.
A story mode, a battle hub, revised controls, modern graphics and the RE engine, which was recently used in Resident Evil: Village, among other things, are just a few of the many innovations. Of course, the well-loved characters Ryu, Chun-Li and Guile will also be joined by new fighters such as breakdancer Jamie. However, we will have to wait until 2023 to start the finished game. However, we were allowed to play the title in advance.
With all the changes, Capcom wants to inspire new players for the series mainly through the revised combat system, but also to challenge the old fiddle, i.e. the fans of the first hour, and captivate them again.

After all, it has been more than six years since the release of the last main game in the franchise. Street Fighter 5 couldn’t really establish itself in Germany at the time either. “Drive System” is the name of the new tool, which should ensure more gameplay creativity. Basically, it behaves similarly to a stamina bar.
We have five different techniques to improve our defense and attack. However, after each application, we lose one or even more of our six Drive Gauge supply.

While this bar will slowly replenish, should it be completely empty, we run the risk of being pounded into a stunned state by our opponents. If you want to win the fight, you should avoid this as much as possible and not get into the so-called burnout.
The punches, kicks and combos that are dealt then also take away significantly less health from the opponent. Due to this feature, several exciting rounds developed in our try-out session, which actually enhance the gameplay and increase the fun of the game.
Not only the gameplay will be more variable, but also the actual controls. Street Fighter 6 makes fighting easier, especially for newcomers, thanks to a modernized key assignment. But there is also good news for older fans of the series:
On the one hand, the transition is relatively easy. We got used to the new method within just a few laps. Sure, it’s greatly simplified, because special attacks can be carried out relatively easily with a combination of keystrokes, but that doesn’t make the game unfair.
On the other hand, the matches always remain balanced and exciting, despite our opponent’s different control options, and it doesn’t matter whether the person is using a gamepad or an arcade joystick. We have tested both variants extensively and both worked without any problems.
Veterans and career changers
Of course, we have a large roster ready for these moves again. There are already some leaks about the fighters, but only five have been confirmed so far. There we have the classics Ryu, Chun-Li, Luke and the now bearded Guile, but also a new comrade named Jamie. In our try-out session we already had the opportunity to fight a few rounds with the newcomer. As is typical for Street Fighter, the breakdancer also differs significantly from the rest of the characters with a unique fighting style.
