Summer Game Fest 2022: A scary event, but some things were also stupid
Yesterday evening, June 9th, 2022, the second highlight of the summer gaming events took place (after Sony’s “State of Play” stream almost a week ago, with the new trailer for Final Fantasy 16), namely the main show of the Summer Game Fest. Anyone who has ever seen an event of this kind by Geoff Keighley (he now does a few throughout the year) knows what awaited us again this time: numerous “world premieres”, PR blubber at its best (every game is basically ” awesome”, will blow our minds and ensure world peace; I’m just exaggerating slightly) and a constantly grinning moderator who exchanges compliments with the invited developer buddies as if it were about the table tennis world championship.
The beauty of Summer Game Fest is that Keighley has just under two hours to whip out a variety of announcements, trailers, and gameplay scenes. The pace and number of hits are therefore quite high, and there is comparatively little time for introductions and dialogue. There are also no relaxing (read: often disruptive) event acts such as musical interludes here. Unfortunately, some “advertising blocks” slowed down the announcement flak for a short time. I like The Rock, but that sucked.
Warmed up for preheating
It is also part of Keighley’s events that certain games appear again and again, no matter how exciting the associated “world premieres” are. Fall Guys is one of these titles, but also a Warframe, Genshin Impact or Cuphead. There was also a whole series of announcements that were actually only based on exciting announcements of the last few days, weeks and months:
High and low lights
Do not get me wrong. I’m a big fan of The Last of Us and Part 2. And if any of you haven’t played the original part 1 yet, you should do so with the PS5/PC version at the latest. Especially if not only the graphics were actually modernized for the new edition, but also basic systems such as AI, animations and so on. However, since I’ve already played Part 1 (and probably won’t have time for a second playthrough), this news was as exciting for me personally as the announcement that the planned multiplayer mode is now a standalone multiplayer game for the Last -of-Us universe.
On the other hand, I found it exciting that the horror corner delivered at the Summer Game Fest. Well, after various disappointments I’m rather cautious when it comes to Alien games. The Callisto Protocol is definitely on my “Want to play” list from the last few trailers though.
I had a lot of fun with Dead Space back then. But the scenes from Fort Solis, Routine and Layers of Fear also made you want more. Too bad the Blooper team isn’t working on a new Silent Hill after all.
But the survival game Nightingale looked surprisingly good. Some former Bioware developers are responsible for the virtual fight for survival. Setting, graphic design, battles, crafting, map system… it all looks exciting.
And what disappointed me? Well, the first impression of Frost Giant’s first project was rather mediocre. After all, these are old Starcraft veterans who want to advance the RTS genre. But I only saw a moderately staged CGI trailer with generic factions (demons and humans) and a few artworks. In addition, there was information that Stormgate, as the game is called, should be Free2Play, will deliver a co-op campaign and 3vs3 PvP and that you don’t want to dare any other experiments.
I also found it underwhelming quite long gameplay scene for Modern Warfare 2. That looked like typical “Call of Duty” blasts for the last generation of consoles. The demonic fantasy shooting action from Witchfire turned me on a lot more.
What was almost completely missing, however, were the genres with role-playing impact. OK, there was Scenes from One Piece: Odyssey. But I’ve never played a really good one-piece game. Hopefully Sunday’s Xbox/Bethesda Showcase will have more to offer here.
How did you like the main show of Summer Game Fest in 202? Was there something for you? What announcements, trailers, and gameplay scenes blew your mind? What disappointed you? Which announcements did you miss? And are you looking forward to the upcoming events? Tell us in the comments!
