Word has it that Naughty Dog is working on something much bigger than just a simple multiplayer mode:

“This experience is an extremely ambitious undertaking. We are significantly building our studio to ensure we deliver this faithful, standalone game at its massive scale and world in the way fans of The Last of Us and Naughty Dog have come to expect,” said Naughty Senior Manager Communications Rochelle Snyder Dog on the Official PlayStation Blog.

Furthermore, Rochelle Snyder writes:

“We want to make our latest foray into multiplayer to attract new players while providing an exciting challenge for our more experienced fans. There will be more news for you next year and we can’t wait to introduce you to the team behind this new experience!”

In summary, we can have one huge standalone multiplayer expected in The Last of Us universe. According to Druckmann, the game should be as big as any single-player title Naughty Dog has developed so far. The general story of The Last of Us should be built into the multiplayer experience and also have new characters.
