Banjo-Kazooie is rumored to be getting a revival and please let it be true!
When Microsoft fires off announcements and updates at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022 in 95 minutes on Sunday evening, each of you will certainly have certain expectations and wishes for the show. As I wrote in my Showcase column, my main wish is for a big title for Xbox that will be released in 2022.
Well, I think I need to tweak my wish list a bit.
Because a few hours before the start of the show, a rumor is circulating on the internet that there will be an announcement of some kind about a banjo-kazooie game at the showcase. And with that, one of THE Jump&Runs of my youth would celebrate a revival.
Where is the rumor coming from?
ModernVintageGamer, who is himself a developer at Night Dive Studios (System Shock etc.), commented in the Nate the Hate Podcastthat he had heard about this revival and literally said:
“Banjo will be at the show and it will be announced. […] I’ve talked to a lot of people and I’m not an insider, I’m a developer, but sometimes I hear things and I was at the Game Developers Conference and there were people talking about banjo. […]”
He’s heard for several months that something is coming to Banjo, but he can’t say exactly what.
When I read this rumor, I really felt a wave of euphoria rolling through my body. Because the first Banjo-Kazooie, which appeared in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, I count among my favorite Jump&Run games of all, putting it almost on a par with Super Mario 64. The adventure of Banjo Bear and Kazooie the Seagull Lady was bursting with great levels, beautiful ones Ideas and humor, many of the melodies from the game are in my head right now.
An almost equally excellent second part (Banjo-Tooie) and a GBA offshoot followed, but the last major offshoot Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (released on the Xbox 360 in 2008) didn’t really convince me anymore. After that, the series faded into obscurity, but Banjo popped up here and there, most recently as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

A new banjo could also fill a gap
So for nostalgic reasons alone it would be absolutely fantastic if there was a reissue or a new banjo part. But then please in the style of the first two parts and without too much experimentation – that would probably make fans like me the most happy.
A new banjo – which would probably come from developer Rare again – would also have another positive effect. Because it would be a family-friendly first-party title for the Xbox for a long time, of which there are not too many so far. And for this reason, too, I sincerely hope that this rumor is true.
How do you feel about Banjo-Kazooie: would you be happy about a new part?
