Benedict Fox’s Latest Case may sound like the name of a new Wes Anderson movie, but you won’t find perfectly symmetrical shots or custom pastel stationery here. The latest title from Rogue Games and Plot Twist is a metroidvania with a gothic twist, and looks set to appeal to both classic 2D Metroid fans and any expert in the challenging combat of Souls games.
Instead of beginning in a fantasy world, The Last Case of Benedict Fox begins in 1925 Boston, where a missing family sends the titular detective on a journey within himself, literally, as he battles demons and uncovers the truth.
The 2.5 visual style is impressive, resembling the works of Tim Burton or Laika, and gives the whole thing an Arkham Horror vibe. Enemies also show the clear influence Lovecraft had on the game, and it looks like fast-paced combat will reward careful timing and precision over outright aggression. As Fox explores other people’s minds, things will get more and more dangerous.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2023. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass, as revealed during the Xbox and Bethesda keynote.
