Duke Nukem gets film from the creators of the Netflix series Cobra Kai

from Matthias Brueckle
The shooter series Duke Nukem is long past its prime, but the macho with the sunglasses always enjoys a loyal fan base. That’s why he should get his own film. Responsible for? The makers of the nostalgia festival Cobra Kai!

In the 90s Duke Nukem was an absolute king of the gaming scene, but today he’s more of a relic of the old days – one would think. But a loyal fan community still celebrates the macho man with sunglasses, cigar and notorious sayings decades later. Even in Hollywood they know there’s a huge crowd of fans – that’s why there should be a Duke Nukem movie. The film rights have been secured by Legendary Entertainment, the company behind blockbusters such as Dune and Godzilla. Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will be producing the whole thing. (via The Hollywood Reporters)

That’s why the Duke Nukem film sounds promising

Duke Nukem is a dinosaur. Well, not literally, but in everything he represents. A film with him as the protagonist would either have to adapt it properly to bring modern audiences to the box office/tuning in. OR you could leave the Duke as he is, including all the mistakes – and then look at the whole thing humorously and critically. The producers of Cobra Kai have experience with this, after all series protagonist Johnny from Cobra Kai is practically a Duke Nukem: He has nothing to do with modern technology, is sexist, a chav and wants to solve everything with violence. But the Karate Kid series makes him a fascinating person to watch stumble and cheer on. Could the duke use that kind of treatment? We spontaneously say yes!
