High On Life: Whimsical sci-fi shooter from the creators of Rick and Morty is coming

In the current calendar year, the science fiction shooter High On Life, which may seem a bit strange at first glance, should await us on the Xbox Series X/S.

High On Life: Odd fare for Rick and Morty fans

High On Life is not exactly the sci-fi shooter that we might initially expect. Set in a remote, extremely colorful universe where the human species is oppressed and exploited by some kind of alien mafia, we are a restless bounty hunter on a mission to wage war against madness. Well, as best as it can be, because pretty much the entire world is insane in High On Life.

That’s hardly surprising, considering who is behind the bizarre idea of High On Life. This is none other than Rick and Morty co-inventor Justin Roiland, who is also a co-founder of the Squanch Games development studio behind the title. Wacky alien humor paired with sometimes crazy, but all the more charismatic characters are more reminiscent of the popular cartoon series than the creator might be aware of.

The weapons that you use in High On Life show just how hilarious the shooter is supposed to be. Instead of the conventional arsenal of pump guns, assault rifles and revolvers, we shoot through the varied space setting with creatures from other planets, who often feel a pronounced need to communicate during your time together. The personality of your weapon often plays a decisive role here, because depending on how it is, you can use its different quirks to your advantage.

If you haven’t gotten out yet, High On Life has probably already cast a spell over you with its very special charm. In addition to the idiosyncratic weapons and the shrill, loud and completely overloaded world building, the title fortunately has a lot more to offer. According to the developers, not only Rick and Morty fans should be able to enjoy the game, but also shooter players should get their money’s worth.

There it says, bursting with self-confidence, that they have not only created a mediocre, but really very good shooter that does not rely solely on its sense of humor. We will find out by the time of release at the latest whether this is the case and whether the final version of High On Life, which was announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase for 2022, can convince.
