Pentiment: Obsidian goes Upper Bavaria

Great surprise: The creators of Fallout: News Vegas are working on a charming adventure with a woodcut and book illumination look. Pentiment is about the life of a Bavarian journeyman artist in the 16th century.

That sounds weird and it looks that way too. Best of all, treat yourself to the moody trailer below (which is sure not to everyone’s taste). But we’re already full of anticipation – also because we didn’t expect such a small, twisted title from Obsidian.

It goes to the fictional Upper Bavarian village of Tassing, at the time of the transition from the late Middle Ages to modern times. We see the hero Andreas crossing a marketplace populated by sheep and can even influence his past – depending on what we say in an early dialogue, he spent his years of wandering before that in Tuscany, in Basel or in Flanders. During the course of the game, Andreas works as an illuminator, but then witnesses a murder in the monastery. Later he meets legendary philosophers, visits the dungeon or solves tricky riddles – Pentiment seems like a crazy cocktail of classic adventure fun and medieval madness.

Feargus Urquhart, legendary role-playing game maker from the Black Isle period and now studio head of Obsidian, reveals more exciting details on Microsoft’s news blog: “In the new Adventure Pentiment, players travel far into the past – to the 16th century. Studio Design Director Josh Sawyer directs Pentiment, a fantastical story steeped in mystery. Medieval book illumination, woodcut prints and human history inspired the Obsidian development team to create Pentiment from the cradle. In Pentiment you take on the role of Andreas Maler, a journeyman artist working in the former scriptorium of Kiersau Abbey in Bavaria during a time of great social unrest. While completing his masterpiece, Andreas unintentionally becomes involved in a series of murders that occur over a period of 25 years. Peasants, thieves, artisans, monks, nuns, nobles and even saints must be examined and questioned in order to bring the truth to light. It’s up to you to guide Andreas’ choices: from his educational background and lifestyle to the way he investigates the murders. One day he might be digging up a dead monk in the abbey graveyard, the next he might be listening to peasant gossip at the ladies’ spinning mill. Every decision and every accusation has consequences that impact the close-knit Alpine community for generations.

Pentiment will be released in November on PC (Steam), Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. A price has already been set: 19.99 euros. Of course, you only have to pay for it if you are not already a subscriber to Xbox Game Pass.
