Pokémon GO: The research day was finally really good again - if you live in the right place

Yesterday, June 12, 2022, Pokémon GO held a Research Day as part of Adventure Week. This was well received by many coaches, but the place of residence plays a decisive role. We at MeinMMO took a look at what happened.

Which event is it about? In the last few days, Pokémon GO has been running Adventure Week, which culminated in a mini-event in the form of a research day with Schilterus and Koknodon.

For four hours on June 12th, you could encounter altered spawns, encounter wild Amarino and Balgoras, and complete time-limited research in the wilderness.

Now the research day is over and the trainers draw their conclusions about the mini-event in the social networks. We took a look at what is particularly praised and how the gaming experience has to do with where you live.

“The research day was one of the most entertaining events”

After the GO Fest 2022 caused a lot of criticism in the community, especially because of a bad shiny yield, Niantic was able to score a lot with the research day. Above all, the shiny yield was great for many. But the event will also be general on reddit praised.

  • deadly peants: “The research day was one of the most entertaining events”.
  • mybham: “I have always enjoyed all kinds of research days. Today I ran at my own pace for 2 hours and I was like ‘ok, that’s it. Time to do something else’. A monthly research day with any Pokémon would be cool.”
  • TheTraveller: “We were just talking here about how it was definitely more fun than the GO Fest. I know I’m privileged since I’m playing in a reasonably sized city with a lot of PokéStops. But still, the event made me go to areas I hadn’t been to in years and made a lot of new (for me) stops.
However, it made me laugh that I got one more Shiny in 3 1/2 hours today than at the entire (paid) GO Fest last weekend. And despite all the walking, today was a lot more relaxed and fun with no bugs.”
  • Traditional Side6966: “What I liked most about this research day is that you don’t have to rush. At GO Fest or other wild spawn events, you often have to rush to get as many shinys as you want. At these events you get your tasks and want to complete them before heading to the next PokéStop. I walked my main route for my city and managed to complete every single task in that one lap.”
  • Negative Creeq: “The game is at its best when you don’t have to rely on others. This continued pressure on the community makes the game worse. Enjoyed today, decent spawns, good shiny rate. The tasks were pretty chilled.”

Pokémon GO Fest 2022: The Shiny yield was really that bad

Criticism on Research Day – “They just don’t care”

Disadvantages for village players: The event was only a partial success, especially for trainers in rural areas. This is mainly because there are fewer PokéStops there than there are in cities. Since the research day was designed for trainers to turn up and solve the special time-limited tasks there, the number is significantly lower compared to places with many stops.

While the chance of encountering a Shiny Koknodon or Schilterus from the quests was correspondingly high during the research day, these players also need a bit more luck due to the reduced number of opportunities.

This is also criticized by some players, which is why many want solutions from Niantic for the future. So does Ausjam:

This type of research day is very taxing for players who don’t have access to many Pokestops. I live on an island with 8 PokéStops. There are plenty of spawns, a couple of arenas, etc, making the island a decent place to play, but after a 10 minute walk to do those 8 quests (no shiny)… am I done?

I’m sure rural players feel the same way – as opposed to city dwellers who can explore and browse to their heart’s content. A lot of other research days have had long Special Research where just catching and playing gave you tons of chances of a Shiny (Snubbull, Marill, Bidiza, maybe Owei, etc.?), but limiting the chances of Pokestops hurts a lot of the player base.

After 5 years, it would be nice if Niantic knew better.

And others too reddit user express themselves similarly:

  • meow0101: “I wonder why they haven’t come up with a mechanic that refreshes the PokéStops with quests every half hour or hour during these types of events or on Community Days, especially since they love to talk about creating ‘community.’ . These events encourage people to go to different places.”
  • xygnux: “The funny thing is that there was already a solution for this. A research day used to be 20 pages of time-limited quests that you received upon logging in. Like snubbul day. Niantic would just rather sacrifice rural players and weekend workers to their vision.”
  • 000666777888: “You must know. They just don’t care. They are not interested in making their gaming experience good. It really wouldn’t be that hard to allow the stops on such events to reassign tasks, or even only allow it in areas with less stop density. Or they could add additional temporary stops, so that every cell, no matter how big it should be, suddenly has at least x stops. They add these temporary stops at GO Fest events and the like. They just don’t care.”

YouTuber ChaosLady answered the most important questions about applying for new PokéStops in an interview.

Poor spawn rate from Amarino and Balgoras

But there is another criticism of the event. The trainers would have liked more spawns from Amarino and Balgoras. The two dinos previously only existed for a few days through research or from 7km Eggs.

As part of the research day, they should alternately spawn for the first time in the wild. But they were rarely found there (via reddit.com).

  • mybham: “Besides, Amarino and Balgoras weren’t okay, too rarely. Niantic featured them in the Research Day image and made the following announcement: Balgoras and Amarino will appear more frequently in the wild. The words in bold not only give the wrong impression, but are totally redundant since the two don’t spawn in the wild anyway, any non-zero probability satisfies ‘more often.'”
  • Carrisonfire: “I haven’t seen Amarino anywhere, but Balgoras has spawned everywhere on me.”
  • stuw: “While I have to admit that I’m lucky enough to be able to walk to a large city center (and therefore hundreds of stops), this was one of the most fun events I’ve done in a long time. The only downside was the rarity of the Amarino and Balgoras spawns – in the hour I played I only saw 3 Balgoras spawn.

How did you find the research day with Koknodon and Schilterus? Were you able to secure Shinys? And did you spot Amarino and Balgoras in the wilderness. Let us know what you think of the mini-event in the comments and share it with other Trainers.
